This is how ASUS will challenge OPPO and Vivo

THE ASUS ZenFone 4 line will be announced next week, August 17th, in its native Taiwan, and then two days after in the Philippines, where the electronics maker is set to stage a similar entrance on August 19.

And as we noted a couple of days ago, details of several ZenFone 4 models have leaked online — complete with specs and pricing. But nothing official has been revealed until recently, when new phone listings appeared on the ASUS website, seemingly by accident.

The posts have since been deleted (of course), though they did drop an important nugget that deserves more attention than it has received so far. It turns out that ASUS will be going after the likes of OPPO and Vivo by reviving its Selfie smartphone series, arming it with agreeable specs and offering it at somewhat fair prices.

Leading the charge will be the now-confirmed ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie and ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro. Both pack dual cameras on the front, with flash to boot; 5.5-inch touchscreens; and a more-than-adequate amount of memory at 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Those specifications are practically identical to the ones that can be found in selfie phones OPPO and Vivo are pushing hard to sell these days.

Granted, the Selfie and Selfie Pro were listed momentarily at higher prices — €300, or roughly P18,000 or $355, for the base model — than those charged for the OPPO F3 (P15,990) and the Vivo V5s (P14,990), but local pricing could still vary considerably. Not to mention, the next Selfie phones will ship with Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, as opposed to the less-capable MediaTek silicon inside the F3 and the V5s.

It’s been a while since we last saw ASUS handsets with the Selfie branding. The original ZenFone Selfie came out in 2015 and was a popular choice in the local smartphone community despite having an obnoxious 13-megapixel front camera peering from the top of the display. One could only speculate on whether the ASUS ZenFone 4 Selfie and ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro would enjoy a similar appeal.
