Apparently, many agree. Preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S8 have crossed 720,000 units in its native South Korea just seven days after the phone went on sale locally, Samsung mobile chief Koh Dong-jin said at a media briefing. He added the S8 “will be the first device to regain customers’ trust and love. The market response is better than expected.”
The figure represents Samsung’s best outing yet, and only the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7, which moved 400,000 over 12 days, comes close. Analysts say preorder numbers could hit 1 million units, or 2.5 times that of last year’s big Samsung flagship.

The initial demand has also exceeded that of the Galaxy S8’s predecessor, the S7. The S8 improves on the latter, especially in the looks department, with the S8 flaunting what Samsung calls an “infinity” display, though it’s really just a fancy name for a pin-sharp AMOLED screen with a taller aspect ratio than you’re used to seeing.
The bigger takeaway here, however, is that consumers are seemingly unfazed by multiple incidents of the Note 7 catching fire within two months of being on the market. And that Samsung’s brand image wasn’t as badly hurt as initially thought.

Then again, we’re talking sales in South Korea where the company has home-court advantage, so it might still be too early to reach any conclusion.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 goes on sale in the Philippines beginning May 5th. Pricing starts at P39,990 (approximately $808) for the standard model with 64GB of storage.
