THERE’S another smartphone up for grabs in the next few weeks. The LG G6 (click for complete specs), launched at MWC [Mobile World Congress] 2017 in Barcelona end-February, will soon be available in the Philippines.

The Korean manufacturer has revealed to us that its flagship phone will retail at P37,990 ($758) in the country, which makes it cheaper by P2,000 ($40) than that other Korean device, the Samsung Galaxy S8

You can preorder the LG G6 from April 17 to 30, and get the following freebies worth a total of P8,990: LG Tone Infinim wireless stereo headset valued at P7,490; LG G6 case worth P1,500; and extended one-year LG warranty.

The launch is scheduled for April 18. However, LG Philippines has not divulged the release date of the smartphone yet. We’re guessing it will be around the same time as the Galaxy S8’s, which will be available starting May 5.

The LG G6 is the company’s way of righting the wrong of last year’s LG G5, whose modular-design implementation did not take off with consumers around the globe.

Standing center stage is the 5.7-inch screen with 18:9 (or 2:1) picture size that’s a wee bit taller than the 16:9 ratio that we’re used to. LG has managed to fit the bigger display with curved corners into a compact form factor about the size of the 5.3-inch G5. And the bezels, almost non-existent like those of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Xiaomi Mi MIX, emphasizes that even further.

The G6 is equipped with two 13-megapixel rear-facing cameras, one of which has a 125-degree lens to capture wide-angle shots. On the front is a 5-megapixel camera with an expanded 100-degree field of view.

If you’re after squarish photos popularized by Instagram, you’ll be glad to know that the LG G6 includes Android’s first Square Camera mode, with a function that can divide its screen into two identical squares for simultaneous photo-taking and editing.

For the first time, LG has thrown in water- and dust-resistance to a flagship smartphone. Unfortunately, it’s powered only by last year’s Snapdragon 821, not exactly Qualcomm’s latest and greatest.
