AS we previously reported, Nokia is back… sort of. The Nokia 6 by Finnish company HMD Global, which won the rights to stamp the universally celebrated brand on both smart and basic phones, is the first Nokia to run Android. It’s also a midranger with an aggressive price tag (1,699 yuan, roughly $250 or P12,200) and an even more aggressive strategy for the Chinese market, where it will be exclusively available for online purchase.

Luckily for us, the Nokia 6 may not be the only device HMD Global will launch in early 2017. Rumor has it that a Nokia 8 will be revealed at MWC [Mobile World Congress] 2017 next month in Barcelona. It is said to be a flagship phone, which the internet has dubbed as such for reasons that have everything to do with Nokia’s affinity towards the number, especially in the context of past Nokia camera phones like the N8 and the 808 Pureview.

Better still, we probably now know what it looks like and what killer feature is baked into the smartphone. Because apparently, the device was in front of us all along. Well, technically, the attendees of CES 2017 who chanced upon it. Qualcomm reportedly showed it off at the consumer-electronic show in Las Vegas. And though the chip maker explicitly told people not to take photos and videos of the Nokia 8… well, you get where we’re going with this.

Anyway, based on the videos, the Nokia 8 could come in two variants. One will feature a 24-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization and a top-shelf Snapdragon 835 processor with 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of built-in storage. And the other will have less advanced optics and a Snapdragon 821 chip with 4GB of RAM. On-screen navigation buttons are displayed in the lower edge of the screen as well.

Judging from the photos, the demo units also have “HRM” [high-resolution monochromatic?] written on them, suggesting there may be a secondary camera module on the back for capturing black-and-white detail, like the Huawei P9. Or maybe it stands for something else entirely. Heart-rate monitor? It’s possible, but unlikely.

Previous reports had indicated that the Nokia 8 may feature a 5.5-inch, 1440 x 2560 panel and a 12-megapixel front camera, as well as an all-metal build. The last one is pretty much a no-brainer given the aluminum construction of the Nokia 6.

Try not to get too excited, though. HMD Global hasn’t confirmed anything yet besides an announcement on February 26. But here’s hoping a premium Nokia camera phone with Nougat in tow is indeed in the wings. And that it will see a wider release.
