MediaTek Dimensity 8400 launched, promising big performance gains

Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek just dropped a new chip for midrange phones, the MediaTek Dimensity 8400.

And here’s the kicker: the company has completely ditched the “little” efficiency cores we’re used to seeing, opting for an all “big core” design this time around. This thing is all about performance.

The MediaTek Dimensity 8400 is based on TSMC’s second-gen 4nm process and goes all in with eight performance cores, similar to the flagship Dimensity 9400 found in the OPPO Find X8 and vivo X200 series. Specifically, it’s rocking ARM Cortex-A725 cores: one at a blazing 3.25GHz, three at 3.0GHz, and the other four at 2.1GHz.

So when can you get your hands on this silicon? MediaTek’s teasing that phones packing the Dimensity 8400 will hit the streets by the end of 2024 or early 2025. And Xiaomi’s already thrown its hat in the ring, confirming the upcoming Redmi Turbo 4 in China will be rocking this chip, likely in January or February next year.

Recall that the Dimensity 8300 powered the POCO X6 Pro and Xiaomi 14T. We saw the 14T drop in the Philippines for around $444 (P25,999) for the base model with 256GB storage, so expect the Dimensity 8400-powered phones to live in that same ballpark, price-wise.

MediaTek Dimensity 8400 at a glance

Compared to the already impressive Dimensity 8300, MediaTek claims its latest processor delivers a whopping 41% leap in multi-core performance. It’s also packing a dedicated NPU for all your AI goodness, promising to supercharge generative AI tasks. Impressively, the manufacturer says the new chip can precisely control its CPU power curve, slashing peak power usage by a massive 44%.

But what about gaming? The Dimensity 8400 is packing a Mali-G720 GPU, and MediaTek’s making some bold claims: 24% higher peak performance and 42% better power efficiency compared to the last generation. It has even tossed in its MediaTek Frame Rate Converter for buttery-smooth gameplay and MediaTek Adaptive Gaming Technology 3.0 to keep things humming along nicely.
