MediaTek Dimensity 9400 promises big improvements, including AI video generation

MediaTek has announced its latest flagship chipset for mobile devices, the Dimensity 9400.

This isn’t just another chip; the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 is gunning for the top spot in the smartphone world. It’s engineered to power the next generation of premium devices, including the mind-bending foldable designs we’ve glimpsed in recent leaks. But what’s really turning heads are the Dimensity 9400’s vastly improved AI capabilities, promising capabilities never before seen in a phone.

Will this translate to a tangible difference in your daily handset use? Time will tell. The first smartphones packing MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 are set to hit the shelves this quarter. The Taiwan-based chip giant has already confirmed that both OPPO and vivo are on board, with the latter’s X200 series leading the charge. That lineup is launching in China on October 14. OPPO isn’t far behind, with the Find X8 series also slated to launch with the Dimensity 9400 on October 24.

But what about the rest of the world? While initial unveilings are focused on China, there’s hope for a wider release sooner than you might think. If the vivo X100 series’ global rollout is any indication, we could see a few Dimensity 9400-powered devices hitting retailers internationally as early as December.

In any case, MediaTek is confident that the Dimensity 9400 isn’t just about raw speed; it promises great efficiency as well. Compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300 featured on devices like the OPPO Find X7 and the vivo X100 series, the Taiwanese manufacturer claims a 35% performance boost in single-core performance, 28% faster multi-core performance, and a whopping 40% increase in battery life.

How is that possible? By redesigning the chip’s architecture with powerful cores that can handle resource-intensive tasks without breaking a sweat, or draining your battery. The Dimensity 9400 is built on TSMC’s second-generation 3nm process and adopts a second-generation All Big Core design built on Arm’s v9.2 CPU architecture. Essentially, MediaTek packed in a team of powerful cores instead of relying on a mix of high- and low-power ones. This means every task, big or small, gets handled with maximum efficiency.

And it’s not just about the CPU. The company also threw in a top-of-the-line Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU that boasts a 41% peak-performance improvement and 40% faster ray tracing compared to the Dimensity 9300’s built-in graphics — all while using up to 44% less power, allowing you to play the most demanding games on the Play Store longer.

Additionally, MediaTek has equipped the Dimensity 9400 with its 8th generation NPU, enabling AI features never before seen in a smartphone chip. This includes on-device LoRA training — a big deal because it allows AI models to be fine-tuned directly on your phone. With it, your device’s AI apps can get smarter and more personalized over time without needing to send data to the cloud. The Dimensity 9400 also allows for on-device video generation — imagine creating AI-generated videos right on your phone!

And it gets even more interesting with support for Agentic AI, which refers to AI that can act independently and proactively. The Dimensity 9400 provides developers with the tools to build the next generation of AI assistants that can anticipate your needs and automate tasks. Thanks to MediaTek’s latest silicon, smartphones are about to get a whole lot smarter.
