Samsung unveiled a new smartphone, the Galaxy S24 FE, arriving just in time for the holiday-shopping season.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 FE is a direct shot at the iPhone 16 lineup, as the Korean technology giant aims to take on Apple’s recently launched smartphones in the fourth quarter and looks to maintain its position as the world’s top mobile maker.

The brand also announced the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Plus, its first tablets “purposefully built for AI.” These big-screen devices are preloaded with AI features out of the box, and they’re designed to seamlessly work with the S Pen stylus that’s bundled with both models.

A quick look at the Galaxy S24 FE and Galaxy Tab S10 series

Pricing and availability

In the Philippines, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE starts at P39,990 (around $714) for the 128GB storage variant, while the 256GB and 512GB editions are priced at P44,990 ($803) and P53,990 ($964), respectively. All three configurations come with 8GB of physical RAM.

True to the leaks, the company’s latest sub-flagship comes with a higher price tag than its predecessor. This trend is mirrored by other smartphone manufacturers who have been steadily increasing the prices of their premium offerings. Locally, the Galaxy S24 FE is available in a trio of colors — Blue, Graphite, and Mint.

The top-shelf Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra is priced from P92,990 ($1,661) for the version with 12GB of physical RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Plus, on the other hand, comes in both Wi-Fi and cellular models. The Wi-Fi-only version has a starting price of P68,990 ($1,232), while the 5G edition will set you back P76,990 ($1,375) if you opt for the base configuration. Both models are available in Moonstone Gray and Platinum Silver colors.

The two Tabs will be available in the Philippines beginning September 27. Preorder the devices until October 3, and you’ll get a free pair of Galaxy Buds FE wireless earbuds. Plus, if you bundle your tablet purchase with other eligible Samsung products at participating retailers, you’ll also score an additional P10,000 ($179) discount.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE: A substantial sub-flagship upgrade?

The Galaxy S24 FE is essentially a stripped-down version of the regular Samsung Galaxy S24. It retains many of the key specs of its more expensive sibling while offering a more aggressive price tag.

One notable change this year is the move to a metal build. Unlike previous generations, which featured a plastic body, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE boasts a more premium metal construction that feels more durable and substantial in the hand. This upgrade is indeed a nice touch. The use of a metal build is a significant upgrade that not only enhances the device’s durability but also gives it a more premium feel in the hand. It’s a welcome change that many users have been anticipating and one that helps the Galaxy S24 FE stand out from its predecessors.

The minor spec downgrade is expected, but then again, we’re still not sure what to expect from the Exynos 2400e, which, according to reports, is a downclocked variant of the Exynos 2400 found in international variants of the Galaxy S24 series. In any case, this would mark a departure from previous iterations, which utilized flagship chips that were at least a year old.

Based on our initial hands-on experience, Samsung fans can rest assured that the Galaxy S24 FE delivers a smooth and responsive performance. Despite its slightly downgraded processor and paltry 8GB RAM, the phone feels just as snappy and fluid as other modern sub-flagships we’ve tested recently. This suggests that the Exynos 2400e, while not as powerful as its flagship counterpart, is still capable of handling everyday tasks with ease.

And where the Galaxy S23 FE had Gorilla Glass 5, the new release will be protected by Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the front and back, providing even more resistance against scratches and drops while also complimenting its aluminum frame with a polished finish. The Galaxy S24 FE also arrives with an IP68 rating, ensuring it’s protected against water and dust ingress.

Elsewhere, the newly launched smartphone boasts a stunning 6.7-inch 2 Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that supports up to a 120Hz refresh rate and a 4,700mAh battery. At the back, you get a 50-megapixel main camera, alongside a 12-megapixel ultrawide and an 8-megapixel telephoto option. For selfies and video calls, Samsung equips the unit with a 10-megapixel camera.

The Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra boasts a larger 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, while the Galaxy Tab S10+ has a 12.4-inch screen.

Both models feature a MediaTek Dimensity 9300 Plus chipset, which appears in a lot of flagship phones these days. In other words, you don’t have to worry about performance, as the Galaxy Tab S10 family has more than enough power under the hood to handle demanding apps and tasks. This enhanced processing power also enables faster and more responsive AI features, which can be easily accessed using the new Galaxy AI Key on the Book Cover Keyboards.

Speaking of which, AI is once again a highlight here. Beyond the hardware, the Tab S10 series offers a range of AI-powered features. Both devices can even double as a home AI device, providing a visual overview of your house and connected devices through 3D Map View.
