Huawei nova 12 series arrives in Southeast Asia

Following its launch in Mexico earlier this week, the new nova 12 series comprising the Huawei nova 12i, Huawei nova 12 SE, and the more specced-out Huawei nova 12s have arrived in Malaysia.

Like Huawei‘s previous nova smartphones, all three models highlight their camera capabilities, as well as their design and the latest EMUI 14 software, which brings SuperHub 2.0 and a number of visual upgrades.

In Malaysia, the nova 12s carries a suggested retail price of RM1,999 (around $422 or P23,753). The nova 12i and nova 12 SE, on the other hand, cost RM1,299 ($274 or P15,435) and RM1,499 ($316 or P17,811), respectively, for 8GB of RAM and 256GB of onboard storage.

Now that the nova 12 series is available in at least one Southeast Asian market, could the Philippines be next? That would make sense considering the Huawei nova 11 series launched in June last year. At the time the Huawei nova 11i made its local debut, it was priced as low as P11,999 ($213) for the online-exclusive 8GB/128GB variant.

But enough of the old, and let’s talk about what’s new.

The Huawei nova 12s obviously takes its design cues from the nova 11 and nova 11 Pro, and its specs are quite identical to what the standard nova 11 offered as well. Its highlights include a 6.7-inch, 120Hz OLED screen, a 60-megapixel selfie shooter, a 50-megapixel rear camera, and a 6nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 4G chipset under the hood.

Both the nova 12i and nova 12 SE share a 108-megapixel main camera at the back, but the latter upgrades to an 8-megapixel ultrawide alongside a dedicated 2-megapixel macro shooter that gets you as close as 4cm. The nova 12 SE also brings an OLED punch-hole display and a 32-megapixel front camera for high-res selfies and vlogging.

Paying extra gets faster charging as well, with the nova 12 SE supporting Huawei’s SuperCharge Turbo 2.0 out of the box, which the company says can give you a full charge in just 32 minutes.

The Huawei nova 12i, meanwhile, has a 6.7-inch LCD display with always-on functionality, which is a pleasant surprise for a non-OLED panel. Its 5,000mAh battery is another highlight, as you should easily get more than a day’s worth of mileage out of a single charge with normal usage. The battery supports fast charging up to 40 watts, too. Plug it in for half an hour, and you should be good to go for a solid chunk of the day.
