The first gaming smartphone powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform is now known. RedMagic, the gaming sub-brand of Nubia Technology, today announced that its upcoming flagship will indeed use the new chipset.

(Update, November 23: The RedMagic 9 Pro and RedMagic 9 Pro Plus have launched as the world’s first Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 gaming phones!)

This, after the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 made its debut last week, and just a day after that, Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 14 Pro and Xiaomi 14 as the industry’s first phones built around the top-end 4nm chip.

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the company’s first mobile processor with on-device AI processing, allowing phones to process generative AI tasks natively, as opposed to offloading them to the cloud. It is said that devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 packs the fastest solution for stable diffusion, with the ability to create an image in a fraction of a second. GPU-wise, there’s an integrated Adreno 750 graphics chip here that offers 35% faster peak performance as well as hardware-based ray tracing and support for the Unreal 5 engine.

Could this be a RedMagic 9 series phone?

As for the upcoming RedMagic gaming phone, it’s likely that the RedMagic 9 (and RedMagic 9 Pro?) will be the first gaming phone based on the new chip. It was reported last August that an unknown Nubia device with model number NX769J went through Geekbench and posted single- and multi-core scores of 1,596 and 5,977, respectively. The device had 12GB of RAM and ran Android 14 out of the box. It also received the Wi-Fi Alliance certification.

The most recent leak claims that the RedMagic 9 series packs a huge battery rated at 6,200mAh.

Alleged RedMagic 9 series battery capacity

Recall that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered RedMagic 8 Pro and RedMagic 8 Pro Plus debuted in China in December 2022 with up to 6,000mAh battery and support for a maximum 165-watt fast charging. The base model was priced from ¥3,999 (around P31,064 or $547). It arrived in the Philippines with a starting price of P42,999 ($756).
