Transsion Holdings, which operates TECNO, Infinix, and Itel in the Philippines, held on to the top spot of the local smartphone-vendor ranking for two consecutive quarters.
According to the latest International Data Corporation report, Transsion widened its lead in the second quarter of 2023. It captured 38.3% of the market, up from 19.5% in the first quarter. Second-placer realme, on the other hand, accounted for 16.3% of total shipments. Recall that the BBK Electronics brand was dethroned early this year after being the biggest smartphone manufacturer in the country for two consecutive years.
Of the three Transsion brands, TECNO Mobile contributed the most to Transsion’s success, growing 237% year on year and 145% quarter on quarter. This was largely due to the subsidiary’s increased channel coverage throughout the Philippines and launch of multiple phone models, led by the Spark 10 series, which IDC said propelled TECNO’s ultra-low-end price segment — or the category that consists of units priced less than US$100 — to more than triple in growth both quarterly and annually.
Rounding out the top five local smartphone vendors last quarter were Xiaomi, which climbed to the third spot from fifth with an 11.5% market share; OPPO, which fell one place with 10.7%; and Samsung, which re-entered the ranking with 9.8%. Notice that former fourth-placer vivo isn’t part of the list this time.
