New Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 to bring flagship features to midrange devices

Qualcomm has announced a new chipset for sub-flagship or upper-midrange devices, the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2. Curiously, the chip maker has skipped the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 monikers for the Snapdragon 7 successor, which it says is its “most powerful 700-series yet.”

The company says it aims to bring flagship-grade features from its 8-series lineup to future mid-tier devices. The new processor, which is built on the same 4nm manufacturing process that the top-end Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 uses, also advertises substantial performance and power-efficiency improvements over the previous generation.

It boasts a main Kryo CPU core clocked at 2.91GHz alongside a CPU package that is said to bring 50% faster performance compared to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 platform. It also comes with an unnamed Adreno GPU that promises to deliver up to 2x better performance, while efficiency should be up by 13% across various tasks.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 has been advertised to offer an upgraded ISP that supports up to 200-megapixel image sensors as well as enhanced low-light photography with wider dynamic range and 4K HDR video capture. On the connectivity front, the chip is said to deliver increased 5G speeds along with the latest Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 standards.

Qualcomm announces the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 5G chipset. Previous rumors claimed it could potentially match the performance of the chip manufacturer’s earlier Snapdragon 8 chips

Previous rumors claimed that the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 could potentially match the performance of Qualcomm’s earlier Snapdragon 8 chips. But even if that turns out to be true only to a certain degree, it may spell trouble for the competition.

So, when can we expect the first Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 phones to hit stores? Qualcomm earlier confirmed that the initial wave of devices powered by its latest chipset will launch later this month, with the unannounced Redmi Note 12 Turbo and Realme GT Neo 5 SE among the models rumored to launch with the chip.

Phones powered by the Snapdragon 7 Plus Gen 2 are expected to be priced between $400 (around P21,880) and $600 (P32,820).
