What could turn out to be the fastest-charging commercially available smartphone gets a launch date.
(Update, February 10: The Realme GT Neo 5 is official! And the Realme GT3 with 240-watt charging is coming, too.)
The Realme GT Neo 5 — stylized as Realme GT Neo5 — is set to debut in China on February 9, according to Realme‘s account on Chinese social-media platform Weibo. It’s likely then that the upcoming model will go official globally at the Mobile World Congress 2023 technology event in Barcelona, Spain. At MWC 2022, the brand introduced the Realme GT 2 and Realme GT 2 Pro to the international market.
The Realme GT Neo 5 is already confirmed to come with a whopping 240-watt fast-charging solution, which can supposedly let you watch an hourlong show even with just a 30-second charge. Topping it up should take less than 10 minutes. The architecture it uses has three 100-watt charge pumps working together via a parallel design, plus multiple sensors for safety. The system’s maximum charging-conversion efficiency is said to be 98.5%.
As we reported, the yet-to-be-unveiled phone will ship with the industry’s first 12A charging cable to supply a total of 240 watts of power to the dual-cell battery, as well as a 240-watt dual-GaN mini charger — another first in the mobile landscape.
There could be two versions of the Realme GT Neo 5 — the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1-powered unit pairs a 4,600mAh battery with 240-watt charging, while the MediaTek Dimensity 8200-based model has a 5,000mAh cell with 150-watt charging.
Rumor has it that the two variants’ back design is different as well, but the rest of the specs and features are the same. We’re talking about a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 main sensor with optical image stabilization, an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens, a 2-megapixel macro camera, a 16-megapixel selfie shooter, a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with a 144Hz refresh rate and a 2,772 x 1,240 resolution, up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB UFS 3.1 storage, and Android 13 layered with Realme UI 4.0. The launch teaser also suggests what could be the company’s version of OPPO’s Orbit Breathing Light notification system.
The Realme GT Neo 3 arrived in the Philippines. Will the latest Neo be released locally, too? We hope so.
