Market-research firm Canalys’ latest quarterly report on the global smartphone market is in. Based on the preliminary estimates for the first quarter of 2022, Samsung remained king of the hill, with a 24% share of the worldwide market, while the rest of the top five were composed of the same brands, in the same order as last year’s January to March ranking.
That means Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo still trailed the South Korean electronics giant, and the gap only grew for most. Besides Samsung, Apple was the only other company featured in the report that managed to improve its sell-in shipments, which comprise sales between the manufacturer and retailers, with a 3% increase year on year.
Canalys also notes that OPPO’s market share included shipments from its sub-brand, OnePlus, but that wasn’t enough to keep the firm from losing one percentage point from last year’s survey.
Apple was buoyed by the strong sales of its iPhone 13 series, as well as the third-generation iPhone SE, which launched just last month. Samsung, on the other hand, enjoyed increased demand for its Galaxy A and Galaxy S22 series models. In the meantime, Chinese vendors suffered supply-chain challenges for its lower-end handsets and poor sales in its home market.
Earlier this year, Samsung launched its latest Galaxy A and S series smartphones in the Philippines. The top-end S22 Ultra starts at P68,990, or roughly $1,314 converted, at local retail.
Another notable finding is that the overall shipments fell 11% due to the difficult economic impact of the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine War, and China’s strict lockdown measures, in addition to the weak global demand for smartphones during the first quarter of 2022.
Looking ahead, Canalys expects companies to alleviate their component shortages and supply-chain issues, which in turn is expected to help lower costs and perhaps even boost sales across the board.
