Which smartphones were most popular in the Asia-Pacific region in the first quarter of 2021? In a new report by a market-research firm, the top three spots belonged to Apple‘s newest models.

According to Canalys, the iPhone 12 series handsets were the most sought-after phones on this side of the world, with the biggest, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, shipping the most number of units. Trailing closely behind it were the Apple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

Canalys explains the 2020 iPhones’ strong performance in retail last quarter was driven by two factors: strong 5G penetration and the regional market’s pent-up demand for a 5G-capable iPhone. Recall that the iPhone 12 series was the first Apple lineup to have the capability to access 5G networks.

There was another iPhone that broke into the top 10; 2019’s regular Apple iPhone 11 model ended up in seventh place.

OPPO posted a strong showing from January to March 2021, too, with the OPPO A93 5G and OPPO A15 landing fourth and sixth, respectively. Xiaomi also had two devices in the rankings, and both were from the budget Redmi 9 series. The Redmi 9A made it to fifth place, and the Redmi 9, to the tail end.

Samsung and Huawei, on the other hand, each had one, though one was targeted at the low-end market, while the other was meant for the moneyed class. The Samsung Galaxy A12 was last quarter’s eighth most popular smartphone in the Asia-Pacific region. The number of Huawei Mate 40 Pro units shipped, on the other hand, was high enough to get the handset to the ninth spot.
