Get ready to roll out the red carpet; the predecessor of the Reno 4 is launching in the Philippines soon.

OPPO has confirmed that the OPPO Reno 5 is arriving in the Philippines in February (update: the date’s February 10!), days after we reported seeing local listings for it. Better yet, it’s not only the 4G version that will be available in the country; the 5G variant will go on sale, too, making it the third 5G-ready OPPO handset in the Philippines after the Find X2 Pro and Reno 4 Z 5G.

In China, the Reno 5 5G starts at ¥2,699 (roughly P20,066 or $418 converted). The Reno 4 5G in Vietnam, on the other hand, is priced at ₫8,690,000 (P18,135 or $377).

“With the steady growth of 5G rollout in the country and our cutting-edge camera technologies, we promise to equip young Filipinos with a Reno smartphone that can inspire them more to creatively #PictureLifeTogether with friends and family in this highly digital-driven lifestyle,” OPPO Philippines marketing director Raymond Xia says.

With local telecommunication firms Globe Telecom and Smart Communications aggressively rolling out their respective 5G networks comes the opportunity for people to discover more diverse and complex content. We saw it happen when 3G became ubiquitous. We saw it happen when nations transitioned to 4G. And we’ll see that again as 5G becomes more popular, for sure. OPPO believes in that as well.

The current trend of short videos? According to one of the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturers, with the increased speeds brought by 5G, that is set to continue, as the new generation of mobile network “makes it easier to watch, download, and share videos of all types.” Smartphone habits, it predicts, are going to change, with people becoming more interested in creating video content.

Hence the focus on video that lead the development of a more advanced and more comprehensive imaging system on the OPPO Reno 5 5G and OPPO Reno 5 4G. It’s what the company calls the OPPO Full Dimension Fusion Portrait Video System, it informed us at the regional imaging workshop we recently attended. The activity was presided by OPPO Japan Research Center lead technical director Jun Luo and OPPO imaging product manager Chenghao Lu.

The system is all about integrating imaging hardware and software to make producing stunning portraits and scenery simple for OPPO Reno 5 5G and Reno 5 4G users. And it consists of these two engines:

1. Quality Enhancement Engine. A suite of algorithms work hard to bring about quality video images in any situation. Doesn’t matter if it’s a low-light, bright-light, or fast-motion environment. According to OPPO, it’s the basis of many of the core imaging functionalities on the Reno 5 5G and Reno 5 4G, one of which is AI Highlight Video to improve brightness, dynamic range and colors, and clarity. AI Highlight Video is said to intelligently combine algorithms of OPPO’s Ultra Night Video and Live HDR. Fun fact: It’s the first time for OPPO to put the latter two under one feature — a feature that the Reno 5 5G and 4G models offer.
2. Portrait Perception Engine. With this engine’s fine-grained definition of criteria for portrait effects, OPPO promises naturally processed human subject and backgrounds in videos. With Scene Design Manager, it uses OPPO’s portrait-scene design capabilities to deconstruct real-life user video or image scenarios in the company’s proprietary database. “Through this, we can better establish more precise definitions of each scene based on realistic requirements, helping train the AI model to better assess individual scenes and provide users with portrait optimizations based on a variety of scenarios in a detailed way,” OPPO explains.

Of course, we have yet to road-test either the OPPO Reno 5 5G or OPPO Reno 5 4G, so we’ll have to hold off further comments until then. But this early, we admit that we’re already excited to see if both can really deliver what they’re supposed to bring to the table.
