Over the last few months, Globe Telecom has been aggressively rolling out its 5G technology across its nationwide network, enabling super-fast, more reliable mobile internet in more locations in the Philippines. What we didn’t know until now is the company’s progress in its local 5G efforts.

According to Globe, its 5G service is now available in 1,045 areas in the Philippines, with at least 848 locations in Metro Manila and Rizal and 183 sites between Visayas and Mindanao. Globe’s 5G network now covers 80% of the country’s urban capital. Many parts of Bulacan, Cavite, and Laguna also have a 5G signal.

In the Visayas region, Globe’s most advanced network is available in Aklan, Cebu, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental, while Misamis Oriental and Davao del Sur in Mindanao are the first areas to enjoy 5G coverage. More cities and municipalities nationwide are expected to get 5G internet access later this year.

Just one of the many 5G speed tests we’ve done since last year

If you’re not familiar, 5G is the latest mobile generation of mobile communications, promising faster downloads and uploads, higher bandwidth, and more stable connections compared with 4G. You’ll need a 5G-compatible device to connect to a 5G network, but a 5G phone or tablet will work on 4G networks.

The most perceivable benefit, of course, is speed. 5G allows your device to have faster internet than what some terrestrial-internet providers offer. It is said to be 10 times faster than 4G, which should be quite an improvement.

In more concrete terms, 5G can let you download episodes of your favorite shows in minutes, not hours. Same goes when you’re downloading a game using your PC or console’s digital storefront. Games that require around 50GB or more of hard-drive space can be downloaded much more quickly on 5G as compared to when using a Wi-Fi connection. You’ll also see less latency or lag, which is important when playing online games, where even the slightest delay can mean the difference between winning and losing.

5G is becoming more commonplace for smartphones, and not just the most expensive ones. There’s a growing number of sub-P20,000 (around $416) 5G devices in the Philippines, including the OnePlus Nord N10 5G, which is priced at P14,990 ($312). The latter is currently the cheapest 5G handset on the local market.
