MediaTek and Kirin chipsets may be dominating in the midrange category, but the flagship space is still Qualcomm’s territory, as seen in the more recent Antutu Benchmark rankings. And it looks like its reign won’t end soon.
If what the leakster shared below is accurate, then the upcoming 5nm-based Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 is over 25% more powerful than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 865. That’s a big improvement — and what we would call a “true upgrade.”
Recall that the highest average score the Snapdragon 865 has reached so far is the Vivo iQOO 5 Pro’s 663,752, as reflected on the September 2020 top 10 list of best-performing smartphones released in China.

The highest rating we’ve seen thus far — albeit in Performance mode and not an average — is the Huawei Mate 40 Pro’s 721,462.
The newly launched phone is powered by a Kirin 9000 system-on-chip, which is the first commercially available 5nm SoC with an integrated 5G modem. It features four Cortex-A77 cores, with one of them getting a fast clock rate of 3.13GHz, and a Mali-G78 graphics chip with 24 cores, which is the fastest configuration possible.
That 721,462 mark is still far from the 847,878 score the Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 supposedly got, though.
Code-named Lahaina, the 875 is expected to be unveiled December 1 at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit Digital 2020. Word has it that the chipmaker has enlisted the help of ASUS to launch Qualcomm-branded gaming phones starting end of this year at the earliest. So saying that we’re looking forward to December is an understatement. We’re crossing our fingers that all of the reports are true.
