Samsung will launch its first smartphone with five rear cameras. And perhaps more surprisingly, it won’t come from its flagship line of devices either.
According to a news dispatch out of South Korea, the Android OEM will launch the Samsung Galaxy A72 sometime early next year, and it will be its first phone with a penta-camera setup. You’ll recall that Samsung launched the Galaxy A71, the Galaxy A72’s predecessor, in January this year. That phone arrived with four separate sensors on the back.

Based on the naming scheme, the Galaxy A72 will be a premium midrange handset priced in the P20,000 (around $412 converted) range. The Galaxy A71 was priced at P22,990 ($474) in the Philippines at launch and comes fitted with a 64-megapixel main sensor and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G processor.
As for the Samsung Galaxy A72, reports say its quintuple-camera module will include a 64-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide option, an 8-megapixel secondary camera with a telephoto lens for 3x optical zoom, and a pair of 5-megapixel cameras for macro and bokeh. It’s also expected to sport a 32-megapixel selfie shooter in a punch hole.

Per the same report, the Korean company might announce the Galaxy A72 alongside the rumored Galaxy A52, which is said to have a four-camera array headlined by a 64-megapixel sensor.
Given Samsung’s history of announcing Galaxy phones with never-before-seen camera specs in the midrange segment, it’s likely that the A72 will indeed be the first device from the company with five rear cameras. Recall that its first triple-camera offering was the Galaxy A7 2018 and its successor, the Galaxy A9 2018, debuted with the world’s first-ever quad-cam setup.
While the Samsung Galaxy A72 won’t be the first phone to have five camera sensors on the rear, it will join a tiny circle consisting of the Huawei P40 Pro Plus and Nokia 9 PureView.
