The world’s top three biggest smartphone companies all make their own mobile chipsets.
Samsung has Exynos, with some Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, S20 Ultra, and Z Flip variants getting the top-end Exynos 990. Huawei develops Kirin, and its high-end Kirin 990 is used by camera beasts Huawei P40, P40 Pro, and P40 Pro Plus. Apple, of course, designs its A series, with the new A13 Bionic making its way into the iPhone 11 lineup and the iPhone SE 2020.
Guess which smartphone brand is tipped to join them next. Another big manufacturer, Vivo.
A popular Chinese leaker has posted on social media platform Weibo screenshots of Vivo’s trademark application for a still-unnamed system-on-chip. The filing was made back in September 2019, so work on this has clearly been done for some time now.
While this does not mean that you’ll immediately see Vivo devices with the company’s custom SoC, it’s great to know that the market will have more choices. If this ends up to be true, then we’ll see another Chinese manufacturer that won’t totally depend on American technologies, a wise move given the issue that Huawei is facing against the United States.

Coincidentally, OPPO, another brand under BBK Electronics — which also owns Realme and OnePlus — has long been rumored to be working on an in-house processor, too. The project is said to be led by OPPO TMG Technical Committee head Chan Yen, who happens to be a former technical director at Qualcomm. Interesting times indeed.
