Huawei recently took the wraps off another budget phone for the local market. The Huawei Y7p is out now in the Philippines with a retail price of P9,990 or roughly $197.
It’s one of the most affordable devices from the world’s second-biggest smartphone vendor, and, more importantly, it’s one of the best-value products you can purchase in the budget segment. So, what are the Y7p’s most compelling selling points? Let’s take a look at five in this rundown.
A camera system that can do it all for cheap
The Huawei Y7p boasts a triple-camera setup around the back, making it one of the most budget-friendly smartphones in the Philippines that has multiple rear sensors. You’d be hard-pressed to find a big-name budget handset that offers the same versatile camera system for photography.
Want to take night shots? The Y7p comes with Super Night Shot mode for brighter, more detailed pictures without the need for a tripod or gimbal. Love travelling and capturing breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cityscapes? There’s an ultra-wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field of view on the Y7p, too.
Even better, the main highlight of the system is a 48-megapixel sensor that uses 4-in-1 pixel binning technology, allowing you to shoot high-quality pictures even in low light at a reasonable 12 megapixels. Pixel binning combines the data from four pixels to produce a single larger pixel with more information, and therefore greater brightness, detail, and dynamic range.

The other rear camera of the Huawei Y7p incorporates a depth sensor that adds background blur to your images, which can make them appear more dramatic, more suitable for posting on social media. With Huawei’s latest budget unit, you don’t need an expensive dedicated camera to take Instagram-worthy pics that your followers will love.
The Y7p’s cameras also support Huawei’s AI Scene Recognition, which can identify more than 500 scenes across 21 categories, including food, pet, and sunset. This feature will try to match the right settings for the camera to produce the perfect shot for the current scenario.
No-notch, all-screen front design
The Huawei Y7p sports a 6.39-inch LCD screen with a punch hole on the top-left side to house the selfie camera. Impressively, the cutout for the camera is just 4.5mm wide, making it one of the tiniest in the industry. Further, Huawei’s punch-hole solution requires more advanced manufacturing technologies to produce and is only 0.1mm deep compared to traditional in-screen cutouts that completely go through the screen.
A punch-hole display will give you a full-screen viewing experience without using a more complicated — and more expensive — pop-up camera mechanism that takes a second or two to activate. So basically, you’re getting a better solution for less money. It’s a win-win, right?
The notch-free design of the Y7p, coupled with its handy but perfectly adequate screen size, translates to an excellent device for watching videos and consuming content on the go.
Flaunt that back!
Available in Aurora Blue and Midnight Black colors, the Huawei Y7p brings a stunning and distinctive rear design to the entry-level segment, where most devices tend to look alike. The back features a reflective layer on top that’s made using a nano texture etched into the phone’s polymer body to produce a fancy-looking rectangular glare effect.
And in today’s market where color options have become a feature rather than just text on a specs sheet, the Y7p’s gorgeous back designs add to the compelling reasons for purchasing the phone and showing it off the moment you take it out of the box.
More power and storage for less
On the inside, the Y7p packs the same octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 710F chip used in more expensive Huawei devices. The Kirin 710F is a 12nm chip, meaning it is optimized for power savings, and takes advantage of Huawei’s proprietary GPU Turbo 3.0 software feature. The latter can seriously speed up your games by helping the system allocate resources where they’re needed most and will have the greatest impact.

GPU Turbo 3.0 also cuts down on chipset power consumption by up to 10% depending on what you’re playing. The list of supported titles includes Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, PUBG Mobile, Fortnite, Minecraft, and Real Racing 3. That said, if you are even a little bit into playing games on your smartphone, the Huawei Y7p certainly won’t disappoint with its gaming-focused specs and features.
Another thing that stands out is the Y7p’s rather generous 64GB of internal storage that can be further expanded up to 512GB using a microSD card. This lets you bring more media with you wherever you go, and you can use it to install console-quality games for Android, which usually take up a ton of space on your phone. With the Y7p, you won’t need to delete files often or offload them to an external hard drive.
And while on the subject of apps you can install on your phone, take note that the Huawei AppGallery, which is now the third-largest app store globally, hosts some of the most popular apps for Android locally, including Facebook, TikTok, GCash, ShareIT, and Viber.
Alternatively, you can also download applications such as Messenger, Instagram, Mobile Legends, Grab, and Waze via other third-party app stores and directly through websites.

No need for midday charging
The Huawei Y7p comes with a 4,000mAh battery, which, in our review, we generally praised for its longevity. Huawei quotes up to 47 hours of talk time; 22 hours of video playback; 20 hours of web browsing on an LTE network; or 111 hours of music playback on a single charge.
We found that the 4,000mAh cell will easily make it through a day without charging, and it can probably survive the second day if it isn’t heavily taxed by games, LTE data, or a full-brightness setting. Plus, Huawei’s EMUI software with AI power-saving technology handles battery management exceptionally well, so you don’t have to worry about apps in the background hurting performance and battery life.
