Huawei doesn’t look to be breaking the mold with the P40 series’ design. Instead, the company seems to be riding the coattails of a camera-module design trend that it somehow popularized with the release of the Mate 20 lineup: the rectangular camera module.

Technology site 91mobiles and known tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks on Twitter) shared early design leaks and specs of the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro, which will be launching at the end of March 2020 in Paris, France.

While the leaked images show silhouettes of the phones, you can see the rectangular camera module on the back of the handsets, similar to what we’ve seen on the Samsung Galaxy A51, Samsung Galaxy A71, as well as the Indian version of the Vivo V17. Rumor has it even the Samsung Galaxy S11 will sport the same look.

The P40 setup can house as many as four sensors, but we don’t know yet how many the Huawei P40 Pro will have. Earlier rumors claim the Pro model might get a 64-megapixel Sony IMX686 primary sensor, a 20-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 12-megapixel periscope telephoto lens, and macro time-of-flight sensors. There will reportedly be support for optical image stabilization.

Like with the P30 series, the Huawei P40 will supposedly have a flat display while the Huawei P40 Pro will have a quad-curved panel. The smartphones seem to be protected by glass on the back, with an all-glass design in front.

The regular P40 is estimated to get a 6.1- or 6.2-inch flat screen, while the Pro version will have a Samsung-like curved display on all four sides measuring around 6.5 or 6.7 inches. Both devices will have an OLED panel with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Hemmerstoffer points out the unusual metal frame on the corners of the Huawei P40 Pro’s screen, leaving us to wonder how the display folds into that frame.

The P40 Pro has been previously rumored to get a screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a Quad HD+ resolution, and a 98% screen-to-body ratio.

Both handsets are expected to have a USB-C port, a SIM card tray, and speaker grilles at the bottom. On top, there should be a 2mm hole, while the right side houses the volume rocker and power button. There will be no 3.5mm audio jack here.

The render doesn’t clearly show whether there will be a notch or punch hole for the camera sensor. But 91mobiles claim there definitely won’t be a pop-up module for the selfie camera.

As for the rest of the rumored specs, there isn’t much we know about the standard Huawei P40. But previous leaks claim the Huawei P40 Pro will come with a massive 5,500mAh battery with support for 50-watt fast charging. It will also sport Huawei’s new Kirin 990 chipset with an integrated 5G modem.

Huawei could decide to use the Kirin 990 + Balong 5000 modem for the standard P40, while the chip with the integrated modem could power the Pro model. Software-wise, we can expect the Android 10-based EMUI 10, but there most likely won’t be Google Mobile Services.

Besides the standard Huawei P40 and Huawei P40 Pro, we’ve spotted earlier reports that claim there will be a Huawei P40 Lite, which also sports a similar design taken from the company’s lineup.
