Vivo will be the first company to take advantage of the Samsung Exynos 980 processor with the upcoming December launch of the Vivo X30 series phones. Samsung claims the system-on-chip is the first midrange SoC to come to the market with an integrated 5G modem.

Samsung built the platform using two Cortex-A77 cores and six Cortex A-55 units as well as a Mali-G76 M5 GPU and Vivo’s Multi-Turbo technology, which promises a smoother gaming experience.

The integrated 5G modem means it has a simplified motherboard that is cheaper to produce and more power-efficient. It supports dual-mode 5G (standalone or SA/non-standalone or NSA) connectivity and promises download speeds of up to 2.55Gbps.

The Samsung Exynos 980 can combine 4G and 5G downlinks to achieve rates of up to 3.55Gbps. It can also support Wi-Fi 6 and smartphones with five cameras (including the 108-megapixel penta camera like the one seen on the Xiaomi Mi CC9 Pro, aka the global version of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10.

Vivo senior director for chip technology Li Haorong said the company will take full advantage of the Exynos 980’s capabilities. He added that they can also suggest to Samsung features they think their consumers might need to improve the processor.

The upcoming Vivo X30 won’t be Vivo’s further foray into 5G phones; the brand is reportedly planning to launch five 5G devices before the end of 2020.

The Chinese firm didn’t talk about the specs of the Vivo X30 and X30 Pro, but earlier leaks claimed the former will have a 6.5-inch display, while the Pro model will sport a 6.89-inch screen. Both will be AMOLED displays with a 90Hz refresh rate. They will reportedly be uninterrupted, thanks to a rumored motorized pop-up mechanism housing the 32-megapixel selfie shooter.

Battery capacity for the X30 is expected to be 4,500mAh with either 22.5-watt or 30-watt fast charging. The RAM is rumored to be 8GB with two UFS 2.1 storage options: 128GB and 256GB.
