The Xiaomi-backed Black Shark brand introduced the first gaming-focused smartphone on the market, and this year’s Black Shark 2 was well-received for its performance, battery life, and software that caters to gamers.
Do note, however, that if you’ve been eyeing the phone for a while but haven’t pulled the trigger yet, you may want to wait a bit longer. The brand has announced on Weibo that an upgraded version, the Black Shark 2 Pro, will launch in China July 30.

Pricing for the base Black Shark 2 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage was originally set at ¥3,199, or about P23,748 or $465, in China.
While the post doesn’t tell us anything else about the upcoming gaming phone, the company earlier said that its next product will use the newly launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus.

If that rings a bell, it’s because the ASUS ROG Phone 2, which is scheduled to make its debut July 23, will be one of the first to pack the flagship chipset. Nubia will also update its Red Magic 3 gaming phone with a Snapdragon 855 Plus-based variant.

The key difference between the standard Snapdragon 855 and Snapdragon 855 Plus is that the latter has a slightly faster CPU and GPU — about 4% and 15% faster, respectively. Those numbers might not mean a whole lot in the grand scheme, but it will mean something to hardcore mobile gamers who want the best specs for the most reasonable price.
It’s also possible that the Black Shark 2 Pro could get a faster screen refresh rate, instead of settling for the usual 60Hz. We’ll definitely know much more about the handset towards the end of the month.
