OnePlus 7 Pro among phones with best screens

The OnePlus 7 Pro is set to make its global debut May 14, and hype for the flagship smartphone continues to grow.

And if today’s tweet courtesy of DisplayMate, one of the leading authorities when it comes to mobile screens, is any indication, the next OnePlus phone is likely to have one of the best displays you can get on any device, comparable to that of the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and Apple iPhone XS Max.

Which is kind of a big deal considering the OnePlus 7 Pro should cost less than its big-name rivals from Samsung and Apple, despite reports that it will be more expensive than its predecessors. Word has it that the base 6GB/128GB model should be priced at around €700 (roughly P40,727 or $781), while the 8GB/256GB option might sell for €750 (P43,636 or $837). The top-shelf 12GB/256GB version will be €820 (P47,708 or $915), rumors say.

What to expect

DisplayMate awarded the OnePlus 7 Pro an A+ rating, placing it on equal footing with phones with the best screens on the market, although we’ll have to wait for the in-depth analysis that is scheduled to be published May 14th to get a full understanding of just how good the display actually is.

As to how the OnePlus 7 Pro managed to attain the highest score possible, it might be because the phone features an OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, which will deliver a smoother smartphone experience versus most flagship devices using the 60Hz industry standard. Currently, only gaming phones from Razer and ASUS’ ROG brand — the Razer Phone, Razer Phone 2, and ASUS ROG Phone use panels that support higher refresh rates.

CEO Pete Lau previously told international site The Verge that the display will be “super-smooth and very crisp,” and it’s three times more expensive than panels used on previous OnePlus units, hence the supposed price hike.

The only possible downside to this is that a faster screen will also likely burn through a phone’s battery pack much quicker. So the OnePlus 7 Pro, while presumably a gaming and multimedia powerhouse, might fall short of expectations in the battery department.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the OnePlus 7 Pro will feature a pop-up camera for selfies, alongside a telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and an ultra-wide-angle option.
