Huawei Watch GT with weeks-long battery life to go on sale in PH

This just in: The Huawei Watch GT will go on sale in the Philippines next week, on March 22.

(Update, August 7: How do you pair your Huawei Watch GT with your phone? How do you download watch faces? We answer these and a few more at Watch: Huawei Watch GT how-tos.)

In case you’re not familiar, the Watch GT is a fitness-focused smartwatch that offers multi-sport tracking features in a familiar and timeless design. It is also Huawei’s first smartwatch to run Lite OS, a proprietary operating system built that’s optimized to deliver the longest battery life for the hardware it’s running on.

Which brings us to the biggest advantage the Watch GT has over the competition, specifically those running Google’s Wear OS and watchOS for the Apple Watch: weeks-long battery life. Huawei quotes two weeks of normal use for the Watch GT. It might even last a whole month on a single charge if you’re not wearing it all the time.

If you’re coming from a smartwatch that requires nightly charging, that’s big news. Your mileage, of course, will vary depending on how long you keep the display, heart rate monitor, and/or position tracking turned on. But even with particularly heavy use, the device should last at least a day or two.

For fitness tracking, the Huawei Watch GT uses an app called Workouts, which comes with a variety of exercise modes, including Outdoor Run, Outdoor Walk, Indoor Cycle, Pool Swim, Open Water, and a bunch of others. Yes: It is 5ATM waterproof, so you can swim with it, and you don’t have to take it off in the shower if you don’t want to. Adding to that, the Watch GT relies on three satellite systems for accurate positioning — GPS, GLONASS, and GALILEO.

It can sync with different apps for data tracking, but Huawei recommends using its own Huawei Health app on your phone — any phone and not one particular model or make, or one that uses a specific operating system. Unlike other smartwatches, the Watch GT will pair with any Android phone or iPhone via Bluetooth.

The 46mm body is made of stainless steel and available in black and metal finishes, while the strap uses silicone (even the faux-leather strap has it) to make it more flexible and comfortable to wear for long periods. Round and sporting thin bezels, the device looks like a regular, non-smart watch, which is a good thing; it certainly won’t look out of place outside the gym, especially with the 14 different watch faces you can choose from.

On the side, you’ll find two physical buttons that, along with the 1.39-inch OLED screen, allow you to interact with the watch through button presses and swipes. The display, in particular, is bright and vibrant, which is also to say that you can use it even in bright sunlight.

The Huawei Watch GT is priced in the Philippines at P12,990 (around $246 converted). It’s worth considering if you’re in the market for a smartwatch that looks like a watch, has plenty of tracking features, and keeps the juice going for a long time per charge.
