You might recall that recently Xiaomi branched out the Redmi brand, which will focus on e-commerce and cost-effective devices under its own label. The Redmi Note 7 is the company’s first effort out of Xiaomi’s shadow — and what an effort it is, too.

But if you think the Snapdragon 660-powered phone with a 48-megapixel camera is Redmi’s flagship offering this half of the year, you might be wrong. Xiaomi president Lei Jun said that Redmi will launch a premium phone built around Qualcomm’s latest — and greatest — Snapdragon 855 processor. Even better, the said device will be priced at around ¥2,500, which translates to P19,285 or $370, when it hits stores.
A Pro version of the Redmi Note 7 featuring a 48-megapixel sensor from Sony this time around (the regular Note 7’s 48-megapixel sensor was provided by Samsung) is also in the works, according to the Xiaomi boss.
Besides a Snapdragon 855-powered Redmi flagship that’s priced at around ¥2,500 (P19,285 or $370), a Redmi Note 7 Pro featuring a 48-megapixel sensor from Sony (the regular Note 7’s 48-megapixel sensor was provided by Samsung) is also reportedly in the works.
We’ve seen Xiaomi launch the Pocophone F1 with Qualcomm’s previous flagship chip, the Snapdragon 845, for under P20,000 (under $383) before in the Philippines. So it isn’t a stretch to imagine an affordable Redmi phone using the latest Snapdragon powerhouse. Last year, the Pocophone F1 with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage debuted at P17,990 ($345) locally.

We wonder, though, how this news will affect the rumored Pocophone F2 and Xiaomi Cepheus or Mi 9, which are both expected to offer top-shelf performance at palatable price points. Regardless of how things shake out over the next few months, Xiaomi’s high-end segment will be worth monitoring.
