Interdependent camera-testing website DxOMark has published its review of the Google Pixel 3‘s single-lens system. And according to DxOMark, Google’s current flagship smartphone is just as good at taking pictures and video as the Apple iPhone XR.
Which, on one hand, is good to hear because the lesser, more affordable iPhone can get some very nice photographs. Not to mention it essentially names the Pixel 3 (and iPhone XR) as the best-performing camera phone in the market today if the selection is limited to single-lens systems.

But the review also suggests the Google Pixel 3 isn’t up there with the likes of the top-ranked Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei P20, Apple iPhone XS Max, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 — all of which are equipped with two or more camera sensors on the back.
Overall, the Google smartphone was awarded a score of 101, with 103 points for still-image quality and 98 for video. The Huawei P20 Pro — again, arguably still the best among smartphones — managed 109 points in the same tests.

The DxOMark review praised the Pixel 3’s high dynamic range, as well as its ability to retain detail and reduce visual noise in images. Do note, however, that the Pixel’s Night Sight feature, which automatically makes low-light shots appear brighter and sharper, and therefore better, wasn’t included in the evaluation.
Video recording is also surprisingly good for a single-camera phone, and stabilization is effective even when using the camera while moving. Focusing is said to be fast and reliable, too.
Here’s what the current top 10 camera-phone rankings looks like, according to DxOMark:
- Huawei P20 Pro – 109
- Apple iPhone XS Max – 105
- HTC U12+ – 103
- Samsung Galaxy Note 9 – 103

- Huawei P20 – 102
- Apple iPhone XR – 101
- Google Pixel 3 – 101
