How many rear cameras do you want on your smartphone? Three like on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro? Four like on the Samsung Galaxy A9? Or are you waiting for the Nokia 9, which supposedly has five cameras on the back? Well, LG might just set the bar so high in the near future by releasing a handset with 16 — yes, 16 — rear cameras.

The Korean manufacturer has recently been granted a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a “mobile terminal and control method for the mobile terminal.” The accompanying images show a matrix-style setup of a hexadecimal camera with lenses placed in a curvature — something that’s done, so pictures are shot from different perspectives.
Not 1, not 2, but 16 rear cameras!
The LG smartphone should be able to give you versatility when taking photos. For example, you can choose to use only one lens. You also have the option to use several lenses then select the best shot from each of them. Picture this: You can replace a head’s subject with one that is captured on another lens. Yep, you can turn the head to your desired position.

What’s more, you can even swap the head with one from another snapshot, thanks to face recognition.
Swapping game
On the back panel of the LG smartphone are a flash and a mirror, which you can use to take selfies, as the main camera provides much better quality than the front-facing shooter. Why not scrap the self-portrait cam then? Because it’s still useful in cases such as making video calls.

There’s a possibility that LG will place a touchpad or display on the rear. It’s also probable that the camera technology could be implemented on a handset with a different design. Think foldable or flip. Excited yet?
