Local brand Cherry Mobile has been leading the Philippine smartphone market for the most part for the past few years, with Samsung not far behind. Until the third quarter of 2018, that is.

A recently released report by market-research firm Canalys reveals that OPPO beat the two companies to lead for the first time with a market share of 20 percent. Cherry Mobile settled for second place with 19.3 percent of the pie, while Vivo took the third spot with 12.5 percent market share, effectively pushing Samsung out of the “top three” local list.
This came at a time when Southeast Asia, the most important market in Asia outside of China and India, suffered a 3 percent year-over-year decline. Smartphone shipments in three of the region’s five biggest markets — Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines — dropped by 17 percent, 20 percent, and 3.1 percent, respectively. Only Malaysia and Indonesia experienced growth — 5.3 percent and 13.2 percent, specifically.
“OPPO’s performance was most notable, as it was the only vendor that appeared in the top three in all five of the largest markets,” says Canalys research analyst Jin Shengtao. “Its best performance was in the Philippines.”
OPPO smartphones released in the Philippines from July to September this year include the OPPO Find X, OPPO F9, and OPPO A3s, which, as far as we know, was — and probably still is — the company’s bestseller.
