We’ve seen plenty of impressive full-screen smartphones this year. But perhaps none so far has approached the problem of bezels and notch design with a more innovative solution than ZTE sub-brand Nubia.
Instead of adopting a slider mechanism like the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, Honor Magic 2, and Lenovo Z5 Pro or using hidden motorized cameras similar to the OPPO Find X and Vivo NEX, the new Nubia X has opted for dual screens. Yes, one on the front and another on the back, like the Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus and Cherry Mobile Taiji.

Let us explain. Phones with edge-to-edge displays still sport front-facing cameras, though manufactures have been creative in adopting various ways to keep them away from plain sight. Usually, a fully manual slider or motor is involved. The ZTE-made Nubia X is an exception; it doesn’t have a dedicated camera for selfies, relying on the back-facing system instead for all picture-taking duties with the help of the secondary screen.

Speaking of, the rear display is OLED and measures 5.1 inches, with a 1,520 x 720 resolution. The screen blends with the Nubia X’s glossy metal body. The main screen is a 6.26-inch LCD running at 2,280 x 1,080 pixels. Side-mounted fingerprint sensors are used to unlock the phone without too much hassle.
Before we go any further, it bears noting that OLED displays consume less energy than their LCD counterparts, but they still consume some, so it will be interesting to see if the 3,800mAh battery is enough to last a day with normal usage.

As with most flagships this year, the Nubia X is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, with 4GB or 8GB RAM and as much as 128GB of onboard storage. It also uses graphene film to keep key internal components running cool even under heavy loads. Nubia will ship the phone with a custom interface based on Android 8.1 Oreo.
The Nubia X will go on sale in China beginning November 5th. Local pricing is set at ¥3,299 (around P25,386 or $476) for 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. The variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage will sell for ¥3,699 (P28,464 or $534). The top-end version with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage costs ¥4,199 (P32,312 or $606).
