Huawei Mate 20 impresses in Antutu, can run NBA 2K18 at 60fps

We’re only several days removed from Huawei’s Mate 20 series event on October 16 in London. The long-rumored and anxiously waited Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are expected to take the stage, along with a couple of other devices.

Of course, a lot have been said about the upcoming Mate 20 phones. The rumors and leaks have been churning away for months, and they seem to be corroborating one another. So we already have a good idea of what to expect specs-wise and an even better idea of what they’ll look like.

Now, some more details about the Huawei Mate 20 have emerged in the form of an Antutu Benchmark result posted by Antutu’s official account on China’s Weibo online-media platform. We already know the Mate 20 series will debut the new 7nm Kirin 980 processor, which Huawei says is vastly superior to the flagship Kirin 970 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chips.

The claim may be accurate, as it turns out. The Antutu result posted on Weibo confirms the Huawei Mate 20 comfortably crossing the 300,000 mark for overall performance (the CPU, GPU, and memory scores are also provided in the image below). For comparison, the Snapdragon 845-powered Xiaomi Mi 8 with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage has registered a total score of 287,469 points in the same app.

In another show of just how powerful the Kirin 980 is, a Huawei executive recently shared a video showing one of the Mate 20 devices hitting 60 frames per second on NBA 2K18, which is no small feat given how graphically demanding NBA 2K games are on smaller screens. The Kirin 980 is said to perform up to 20 percent faster while being up to 40 percent more power efficient than its predecessor.

We previously reported on the alleged renders of the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro, which reveal a smaller notch at the top of the Mate 20’s screen similar to the OPPO F9 and Vivo V11‘s. The Mate 20 Pro sports a traditional-looking notch design to house a 3D camera for face unlock, just like on the Apple iPhone XS and OPPO Find X.

Leaked images have also confirmed the Mate 20 phones will continue Huawei’s partnership with Leica in the imaging department, with the Leica branding placed right above the main triple-camera module this year.

We’ll be able to piece together the final details soon enough once the Huawei Mate 20 series becomes official next week. Hopefully, we could bring you the news as they happen on the ground in London.
