Samsung has debuted its first-ever triple-camera (well, four, if you count the selfie camera) smartphone in the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018).

(Update, October 11: It’s official in the Philippines! See Philippine price of Samsung Galaxy A7 with 3 rear cameras announced.)

Available in four colors — black, blue, gold, and pink — it will be released in select European and Asian countries later this fall, with plans to add more markets in the near future.

A source with knowledge of the company’s plans told us at Revü that the device will be made available in the Philippines. The local unveiling is tentatively scheduled for October 27.

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)’s camera system consists of a 24-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel secondary sensor for 120-degree wide shots, and a 5-megapixel sensor for depth sensing.

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) camera setup

The back-facing setup promises brighter, sharper snaps in low light, as it combines four pixels into one. It also has the ability to control the depth-of-field effect when shooting in Live Focus mode, just like on more expensive Galaxy phones, like the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

The new A7’s camera feature set likewise makes room for Samsung’s smart scene-detection option. It recognizes the subject and adjusts the color, contrast, and brightness settings to improve image quality.

The triple-lens setup has been speculated to be a huge selling point of the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus next year. Good to know that you don’t have to spend a small fortune for a Samsung phone with three cameras on the back, though pricing hasn’t been announced yet for either phone.

Last year’s Galaxy A7 iteration is priced at P23,990 (roughly $444) at launch in the Philippines. It’s likely that the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) will cost the same or slightly less than the A7 from 2017.

Besides having a triple-camera system, the new Galaxy — which is also the first smartphone from Samsung equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint reader, an ideal placement if you ask us — has all the trappings of a midrange model.

The Galaxy A7 (2018) is the first smartphone from Samsung equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

The Super AMOLED screen is 6 inches, with a 2,220 x 1,080 resolution, while an Exynos 7885 processor with 4GB or 6GB RAM can be found under the hood. The 24-megapixel on the front should produce more detail than your average smartphone camera. The 3,300mAh battery charges over a microUSB port.

Internally, the Galaxy A7 (2018) shares many of the components used in the Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018), which sold for P26,990 ($500) at launch.

Samsung president for mobile business DJ Koh previously said the Korean tech giant would add more cutting-edge features to its midrange offerings. It seems that the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is the first phone to deliver on that promise.

But it definitely won’t be the last. Earlier this month, the company sent out invitations to an Unpacked event at 5 p.m. on October 11 in Malaysia, where it’s expected to announce another phone with four cameras or one capable of 4x zoom.
