Last week, Xiaomi president Lin Bin gave us our first official look at the upcoming Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, revealing a top-end smartphone that seems to look to the OPPO Find X for inspiration on how to get rid of the notch.
But unlike OPPO’s full-screen phone, the Mi handset may not come with a motorized camera system, if this hands-on video is anything to go by.

The video, which was first spotted on China’s Weibo social-media platform, shows the front of an alleged Mi MIX 3 unit while charging, with the phone’s almost-bezel-less display in focus the entire time.
The person holding the device then proceeds to repeatedly slide the front panel down and up from the rest of the assembly, showing its hidden front-facing camera module in the process. This suggests the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 may not have a motorized section inside that lifts and lowers its cameras when needed, like the OPPO flagship.

Presumably, one has to manually slide the screen down in order to take a selfie or use the 3D facial-recognition system to unlock the device. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but slider phones don’t usually have the best reputation for durability. The jury’s still out on the OPPO Find X (and Vivo NEX).
Although the Chinese technology company has not divulged official details about the Mi MIX 3 yet, we can expect it to include a 3D camera, like the one on the Xiaomi Mi 8, as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with at least 6GB of RAM.

The screen, which will reportedly max out at 2K resolution, could measure 6.4 inches diagonally, while the rear-facing cameras may come with two 12-megapixel sensors. We’ll know for sure once the smartphone launches in early October and gets released within the same month.
In related news, the Mi MIX 3 has been teased by Xiaomi spokesperson Donovan Sung to arrive with support for the next-gen 5G wireless standard. It will make the phone one of the first, if not the first, devices to hit the market with a 5G-compliant modem that delivers faster internet service on-the-go, in addition to wider cellular coverage.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 will support 5G networks
Qualcomm currently has two modems that support 5G networks, for up to 5Gbps speeds. It’s likely that one of them will be included in the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3.
It is widely believed that the first commercial 5G networks will be available sometime in 2019. In the Philippines, telecommunication companies Globe Telecom and Smart Communications have said their first 5G networks should be operational by 2019.
