Following the confirmation of launch rumors, Xiaomi has revealed that it will indeed host a press event on May 31, 2018, in Shenzhen, China.
The Chinese technology company will introduce the flagship 8th anniversary Mi smartphone, or the Xiaomi Mi 8, alongside the Mi Band 3 fitness tracker. Prior to the announcement, there were whispers that Xiaomi would skip the Mi 7 name in favor of something that’s more in line with its 8th anniversary smartphone — hence the Mi 8 moniker.

Xiaomi confirms the impending launch of the Mi 8
The Xiaomi Mi 8 has long been rumored to ship with the best technologies available, which isn’t at all surprising. But it’s only now that we’re seeing convincing evidence that seems to confirm as much.
A recent leaked video allegedly taken during an internal presentation suggests the Xiaomi Mi 8 will be outfitted with an in-display fingerprint reader, built into the 6-inch OLED display for fast and convenient unlocking. Rumors are also flying that the Mi 8 could be Xiaomi’s first notch-bearing phone featuring a cutout at the top of the screen. The phone might include 3D facial-scanning capabilities, too.

Under the hood, the Mi 8 has been tipped to have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (expected), with up to 8GB RAM and 128GB storage (expected as well). For taking pictures, the phone will likely sport AI-driven cameras on both ends with 2x optical zoom for extra reach and taking portraits with creamy depth of field or bokeh. A 4,000mAh battery is said to be powering the entire package.
Importantly, the image also shows the pricing for the flagship model: ¥2,799 (around P22,965 or $440) for the 6GB RAM and 64GB storage version; ¥3,199 (P26,246 or $503) for the unit with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage.
We’ll be able to confirm all the details after the Shenzhen launch on May 31, so check back in a week for our full coverage.
