Look out, Xiaomi. ASUS is gunning for your share of the world’s second-largest smartphone market. ASUS today revealed the ZenFone Max Pro M1 in India — at prices that undercut the nation’s top smartphone vendor.

Highlights of the phone include dual cameras at the back and Qualcomm’s highly capable and efficient Snapdragon 636 system-on-a-chip, which is also present on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro (in India; the global version is called Redmi Note 5 and has different specs) and ASUS’ own ZenFone 5. And yes, the ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 is aimed squarely at people who are strongly considering Xiaomi’s popular midrange unit.

Practical as it is feature-rich, the ZenFone Max Pro M1 will start at ₹10,999 (P8,659 or $166) for the variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. Upgrading to the version with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage will cost you ₹12,999 (P10,234 or $196), while the top-shelf model that bumps the RAM to 6GB and the rear and front cameras to 16 megapixels is priced at ₹14,999 (P11,808 or $226).
Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, is available from ₹13,999 (P11,021 or $211) in the Indian market.

The ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 will go on sale in India exclusively through Flipkart on May 3. ASUS has yet to announce pricing and availability in other countries. Given the circumstances around the phone’s production, it’s unlikely that it will officially land in the Philippines anytime soon, even as an online-exclusive. With this phone around, the case for getting the P19,995 ($383) ASUS ZenFone 5 can’t be made.
The screen on this ZenFone measures 6 inches across, with a full resolution and an aspect ratio of 18:9. For taking photos and video, the base and standard models bear 13- and 5-megapixel rear cameras. An 8-megapixel camera takes care of selfies.

The ZenFone Max Pro M1 runs stock Android 8.1 Oreo out of the packaging and will receive the next-in-line upgrades for the Android operating system, namely Android P and Android Q. Finally, the battery inside the phone is 5,000mAh, larger than the 4,000mAh cell fueling the Redmi Note 5 Pro.
The ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1, which features a 5,000mAh battery, runs stock Android 8.1 Oreo out of the packaging and will receive Android P and Android Q.
