A few days after Apple started selling the iPhone X, Samsung released a video ad mocking the device’s notch. We figured the Korean tech giant would never make a Galaxy smartphone with that design. Well, we could be wrong.
Samsung has just filed an application with Chinese patent organization SIPO. And the document shows different designs, each with a display cutout not unlike that of the Apple iPhone X. It houses the handset’s front camera, earpiece, and proximity sensor.
The notch is the only thing that’s unchanged among the options, while the back panel is a different story.
The design first appeared last year, when the Essential Phone and the iPhone X sported it as a way to increase the screen-to-body ratio without having to remove the selfie camera and other hardware from the front.
It has become controversial — polarizing even. While we at Revü think the notch is no big deal, some people say it gets in the way of using a device, such as when watching videos. Others think it’s hideous.

But it won’t go away at any time soon. Google’s upcoming Android P OS version will support it. And many manufacturers have adopted the design. In the Philippines alone, Vivo and ASUS already launched their respective iPhone X lookalikes, the Vivo V9 and the ASUS ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 5Z. Many more will become official this April alone. Think the OPPO F7 and the Huawei P20, P20 Pro, and P20 Lite.
Of course, filing a patent application for that particular design doesn’t mean that Samsung will end up using it. Only time will tell if the Galaxy Note 9 and its other future smartphones will sport a display cutout.
