Vivo has announced a new smartphone with a trendy 18:9 display and a bargain price tag that should appeal to many. Meet the Vivo Y71.

The phone is now available in Malaysia for RM799, which translates to roughly P10,717 or $206. It could be priced at around P10,000 ($192) in the Philippines. As we’ve pointed out before, the device has stopped by China’s TENAA certification website.
The Y71 is the company’s first budget blower that takes after the Vivo V7 and V9 handsets in terms of sporting a tall screen more suited for gaming and viewing content. It offers 6 inches of screen real estate and a resolution of 1,440 x 720 pixels, similar to the V7 series.
The smartphone houses a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset, which you’ll find in many other budget blowers, including the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. This chip is pretty decent and, as we found, is capable of playing more demanding titles like NBA 2K18, albeit at the lowest graphics settings.

The RAM and onboard storage are pegged at 3GB and 16GB, respectively. Thankfully, the unit includes a microSD slot, allowing you to upgrade the storage as much as you’d like.
As per usual in the segment, there’s no fingerprint reader on the front or back of the Vivo Y71. The rear panel features a 13-megapixel camera, while the front-facing one is 5 megapixels. Software-wise, the handset ships with Android 8.0 Oreo, the latest major release of Google’s mobile operating system, preinstalled.

We’ve asked Vivo Philippines for comment, and will update this post with the company’s response. Vivo was the fourth-largest smartphone vendor by shipment volume in the Philippines in 2017, according to international research firm IDC.
