Yesterday, we reported that the new Nokia smartphones announced at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, Spain, will be launched in the Philippines on April 13. Well, guess what? We just spotted the local price of one of those devices.

The Nokia 1 is already listed on online retailer CMK Cellphones. Apparently, it will go on sale in the country for P4,290, or roughly $83.

Unless another brand will rain on HMD Global’s parade, it’s now clear that the Nokia 1 will be the first Android Go phone that will go official in the Philippines.

Android Go is version of Android optimized for entry-level devices with at most 1GB of RAM. Think of it as a basic OS for basic models, so even budget smartphones can run smoothly. It saves space wherever it’s needed. There are apps that are designed specifically for those wallet-friendly units — apps that should take up less than 10MB of storage and work even when the user is offline. It uses less data. And it has the same key security features as Android Oreo.

The Nokia 1 is powered by a MediaTek 6737M processor coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of expandable storage. It comes with a 4.5-inch screen, 5- and 2-megapixel rear and front cameras, and a 2,150mAh battery. It’s a smartphone made for emerging markets through and through.

The Nokia 1 is available in Warm Red and Dark Blue, but you can dress it up using separately sold Xpress-on covers in Azure, Gray, Yellow, and Pink.

Besides this Android Go phone, the Nokia 7 Plus, the 2018 version of the Nokia 6, and the retro-classic Nokia 8110 4G will also be unveiled in the Philippines, as we reported yesterday.

We had thought there was no possibility of the high-end Nokia 8 Sirocco to be launched next week. It was mentioned in the email sent to us by an executive representing HMD Global, the current licensee of the brand.

But based on the listing on CMK Cellphones, there could still be a possibility for the premium device to show up on April 13.
