HMD Global, the current licensee of Nokia phones, is all set to launch in the Philippines the devices they unveiled at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, Spain. Well, all except for one.
(Updated, April 7: There’s a possibility that the Nokia 8 Sirocco will show up on the 13th. See Spotted: Price of Nokia 1, the 1st Android Go phone in the Philippines.)
Come April 13, the Nokia 7 Plus, the 2018 version of the Nokia 6, the Nokia 1, and the retro-classic Nokia 8110 4G will finally be official in the country.
The Nokia 7 Plus sees the brand riding on the “18:9 aspect ratio” trend, with the smartphone boasting a Corning Gorilla Glass 3-protected screen that measures 6 inches and has a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 (FHD+). On top of it is a 16-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls. On the back is a dual-camera setup that consists of a 12-megapixel wide-angle primary sensor and a secondary 13-megapixel one that delivers 2x optical zoom.
The handset uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It ships with Android 8.0 Oreo and a 3,800mAh battery.
We love the two color variants that are available for the Nokia 7 Plus. Black/Copper and White/Copper are just calling our name, so we’re hoping that HMD Global will release both in the Philippines. We just don’t know how much the phone will be priced locally. Outside, the retail price is €399 (roughly (P25,459), excluding taxes and subsidies.
The Nokia 6 is an updated version of last year’s model. Instead of a Snapdragon 430 chipset, a Snapdragon 630 now powers the device. It has a 5.5-inch full-HD display with a standard 16:9 aspect ratio, either 3GB or 4GB of RAM, either 32GB or 64GB of built-in memory, a 16-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel front shooter, and a 3,000mAh battery with support for fast charging.
The Android 8.0 Oreo-based Nokia 6 (2018) is available in three color blends: Black/Copper, White/Iron, and Blue/Gold. And its global average retail price is €279 (P17,802).
In the bargain segment is an Android Go phone that’s also based on Oreo. In case you didn’t know, Android Go is optimized for devices with 1GB RAM or less. The
Mediatek MT6737M-powered Nokia 1 with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal space belongs to that Google program, and it costs only €85 ($5,424).
The device sports a 4.5-inch screen with 480 x 854 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. It features 5- and 2-megapixel rear and front cameras and a removable Li-Ion 2,150mAh battery.
The Nokia 1 comes in Warm Red and Dark Blue, but you can dress it up using Xpress-on covers in Azure, Gray, Yellow, and Pink. Take note that they’re sold separately for $7.99 (P416) each.
For a blast from the past, there’s the Nokia 8110 4G. The “banana phone” from the 1999 movie The Matrix has been resurrected and updated for modern needs.
The smartphone looks the same as the iconic cellphone, but now runs an operating system known as Kai OS and is on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 mobile platform. It is pre-loaded with stripped-down versions of Facebook, Gmail, and Google Maps. And you’d be glad to know that the popular Snake game is preinstalled there as well.
Rounding out the specs are the following: 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, 2-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and 1,500mAh battery. Available in Traditional Black and Banana Yellow, the Nokia 8110 4G has a global average retail price of €79 (P5,041), excluding taxes and subsidies.
We’re not surprised that the launch date of these new Nokia smartphones has been set. However, we are a bit taken aback that the Nokia 8 Sirocco is not included on the list. After all, we at Revü already spotted Argomall Philippines accepting pre-registration for it together with the other four Nokia devices.
Must be because only a few registered their interest in the Nokia 8 Sirocco? It’s set at €749 (P47,791), which could be prohibitive for most Filipinos. Or perhaps it will come later. We’ll update you once we get word from HMD Global.
