A win for this Huawei smartphone is a win for LG

The smartphone industry is a cutthroat business yet companies rely on each other to survive. The latest example is Huawei’s dependency on LG — and vice versa.

According to Korean publication ETNews, the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS’ 6-inch curved OLED screen with 2,880 x 1,440 resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio is supplied by LG Display.

The triple-camera phone’s panel has an in-display fingerprint sensor just like the one on the Vivo APEX, albeit using the technology of China’s Goodix instead of the United States’ Synaptics. Which means there’s no need for a button to be placed on the panel for your fingerprint to be recognized. No physical key equals full-view screen. Full-view screen equals better viewing and gaming experience.

This is the first time for LG to supply OLED panels to the world’s third largest smartphone vendor. And for the latter’s most expensive handset at that. In case you didn’t know, the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS is priced as much as €2,095 (P136,119 $2,600) — or almost the equivalent to two Apple iPhone Xs.

We find this interesting considering that LG Display has run into problems with, say, the Pixel 2 XL. Many of the Google phone’s LG-made screens are subpar, with issues such as the presence of blue shift at even the slightest angles. The non-XL variant’s Samsung manufactured-displays, on the other hand, are not riddled with problems.

But we are hoping for the best for the panel maker and the whole LG organization. You know how its mobile unit — which is scheduled to launch the LG G7 ThinQ in April — has been struggling for several quarters now. Proving itself to Huawei now may not translate into more money in the bottom line because the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS is too pricey. However, it could turn into a stepping stone to a great Huawei-LG relationship. Or whatever you call it.
