Earlier this year, a top executive at HMD Global — you know, the exclusive maker of Nokia-branded handsets — revealed that they have something “awesome” to reveal at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona.

Perhaps, in part, industry insider Evan Blass — also known as @evleaks on Twitter — has cracked the code. Alleged renders of the Nokia 7+ and Nokia 1 smartphones have surfaced online, the former turning out to be an Android One device. We can’t say we saw that one coming.

If it does run pure Android, the Nokia 7+ may very well be the first Android One phone with an 18:9 display to hit the streets.

Specs-wise, previous reports suggest that it will feature a 6-inch, 2,160 x 1,080 screen; a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset paired with 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM; 12- and 13-megapixel sensors for the main-camera module; a 16-megapixel front-facing camera; and a 3,000mAh battery that charges quickly via a Type-C port.

Purported Nokia 1 Android Go phone render
Meanwhile, the Nokia 1 could be a basic phone running Android Go based on Android Oreo. To recall, Android Go was launched in 2017 as a lightweight operating system optimized and tailored for entry-level devices with 512MB or 1GB of RAM. Android Go units will have stripped-down versions of popular Google apps, such as Assistant Go, Maps Go, and YouTube Go, preinstalled.

That said, it’s likely that the Nokia 1 will launch with a MediaTek processor coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It won’t sting your wallet either, and that’s always a good thing.

A recent report from research firm Counterpoint noted that HMD Global sold 4.4 million Nokia smartphones in Q4 2017 — which is more than what established brands like HTC, Sony, OnePlus, Gionee, Meizu, and ASUS sold in the same period last year. Moreover, that figure places the company 11th overall globally.
