Remember the Vivo smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner that debuted at CES 2018 in Las Vegas? Good news: It’s now official. Or at least it is for the Chinese market.

Meet the Vivo X20 Plus UD, the world’s first mobile device with fingerprint-sensing tech built into the panel itself, and not the home button. Speaking of which, there are no physical navigation buttons below the display and at the back of the device. Welcome to the future.

The phone also unlocks by scanning your face using the front camera, similar to recent Vivo releases such as the V7 and the V7+. Specs-wise, it sports a 6.43-inch OLED display with a 2,160 x 1,080 resolution on an 18:9 picture format. The choice of display technology is expected; as we noted previously, in-display fingerprint sensors only work with OLED panels.

Around the back of the Vivo X20 Plus UD, you’ll find a dual-lens camera module with a 12- and 5-megapixel sensors for the main and secondary cameras, respectively. The front-facer is 12 megapixels and comes with LED flash for clearer selfies in low light.

Paired with 4GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor is likely to make your usage experience enjoyable and fluid, while a generous 3,900mAh battery powers the assembly. The Vivo X20 Plus UD is likewise fitted with Type-C connector for fast charging and data transfer. Unfortunately, you also get an interface based on aging Android Nougat.

It’s hard to imagine anyone getting excited for a Nougat-based phone in 2018. Rightfully, the phone has a lot else going for it.

The Vivo X20 Plus UD will be offered in China from February 1 for ¥3,598, or almost P29,000 or $570. The price puts it squarely in flagship territory, which is why we don’t think Vivo will bring the phone to the Philippines, regardless of how interesting it seems.

Our previous conversations with Vivo executives have consistently suggested the company isn’t interested in selling any of its more expensive products here, in the price-sensitive Philippine market.
