PLDT vs Globe vs Converge vs Sky: Fiber-internet plans available

Sky, one of the Philippines’ more popular internet-service provider, is now in the local fiber-internet space, following the recent announcement of faster broadband packages bundled with video on demand.

In light of this welcome news — because however you slice it, competition will ultimately be beneficial to consumers — we’re updating our previous post, which detailed all the fiber-internet plans that are widely available in the Philippines. Here is the updated list (as of October 20, 2017) in order of service provider:

Residential offers from the county’s biggest internet-service provider is divided into three categories: Unlimited Plans, Speed Plans, and Whole Home Wi-Fi Plans. The most expensive will set you back P3,499 (roughly $68) monthly for 50Mbps, though for a honeymoon period of six months, PLDT will double the speed to 100Mbps. It’s also worth noting that PLDT provides the same speeds for uploads and downloads, something other providers don’t offer.

Unlimited Plans:

Plan 1699 (around $33) — Speeds of up to 5Mbps; unlimited; free modem and discounted installation fee.
Plan 1899 (around $37) — Speeds of up to 10Mbps (up to 20Mbps for first six months); unlimited; free modem and discounted installation fee.
Plan 2899 (around $56) — Speeds of up to 50Mbps (up to 100Mbps for first six months); unlimited; free modem and free installation fee.
Plan 3499 (around $68) — Speeds of up to 50Mbps (up to 100Mbps for first six months); unlimited; bundled with Cignal satellite TV service; free modem and free installation fee.

Speeds Plans:

Plan 1699 (around $33) — Speeds of up to 15Mbps; limited (150GB monthly data allowance); free modem and discounted installation fee.
Plan 1899 (around $37) — Speeds of up to 50Mbps; limited (300GB monthly data allowance); free modem and discounted installation fee.
Note that you can purchase additional data starting at P99 for 4GB if your monthly allocation runs out.

Whole Home Wi-Fi Plan:

Plan 3499 (around $68) — Speeds of up to 50Mbps; unlimited; bundled with Whole Home Wi-Fi Coverage service; free modem and free installation fee.

Okay, bear with us on this one. Globe has a new webpage outlining its current household-broadband offers — and all of them follow the same naming scheme… for reasons we will never fully understand.

Worse still, the site doesn’t explicitly tell you which ones use fiber cables and which ones do not (it all boils down to whether fiber is available in your area; otherwise, say hello to an LTE-based connection). That said, we’re only listing offers that we’re sure are connected to fiber.

Also: All of them have data caps (the more you’re willing to pay, the higher the cap will be), but they are coupled with extras in the form of six months access to Netflix and Disney Channel apps and two months access to HOOQ.

Broadband Plan 2499 (around $49) — Speeds of up to 100Mbps; 1TB per month data allocation; free modem and landline.
Broadband Plan 4499 (around $87) — Speeds of up to 200Mbps; 1.5TB per month data allocation; free modem and landline.
Broadband Plan 6999 (around $136) — Speeds of up to 500Mbps; 3TB per month data allocation; free modem and landline.
Broadband Plan 9499 (around $184) — Speeds of up to 1Gbps; 6TB per month data allocation; free modem and landline.

Taking a no-frills approach to its household offers, Converge ICT has three to choose from. It also has the cheapest unlimited plan at P1,500 ($29) monthly for up to 20Mbps of fiber. Don’t expect any freebies from the company, though.

FiberX 1500 (around $29) — Speeds of up to 20Mbps; unlimited; installation fee: P2,500 ($49).
FiberX 2500 (around $49) — Speeds of up to 50Mbps; unlimited; installation fee: P2,500 ($49).
FiberX 3500 (around $68) — Speeds of up to 100Mbps; unlimited; installation fee: P2,500 ($49.)

Like PLDT, Sky splits its packages into two categories: limited and unlimited, which are self-explanatory. Unlike other internet-service providers, however, the company includes access to live and video-on-demand access to local ABS-CBN channels and shows.

You can also opt in to HBO Go, HBO’s video-streaming app, for an additional P150 ($3) per month. Fiber internet is only available in select areas in Bacolod, Baguio, Cavite, Cebu, Dumaguete, General Santos City, Iloilo, Laguna, and Metro Manila.

Plan 1299 (around $25) — Speeds of up to 10Mbps; 100GB per month data allocation; installation fee: P2,298 ($45).
Plan 1599 (around $31) — Speeds of up to 25Mbps; 150GB per month data allocation; installation fee: P2,598 ($50).
Plan 1899 (around $37) — Speeds of up to 50Mbps; 200GB per month data allocation; installation fee: P2,898 ($56).
Plan 2899 (around $56) — Speeds of up to 100Mbps; 300GB per month data allocation; installation fee: P3,898 ($76).
