MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Plus brings minor speed bump, major connectivity upgrades

MediaTek has announced its latest flagship processor, the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Plus, which just debuted on the OPPO Find X8s series! As expected, it’s more of an iterative bump than a revolution compared to last year’s Dimensity 9400 found in a couple of phones available in the Philippines, such as the OPPO Find X8 and vivo X200, but it packs a few notable upgrades under the hood.

One major upgrade comes in the form of a speed boost for the main performance core. The MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Plus pushes its primary ARM Cortex-X925 core to 3.73GHz, up from 3.63GHz on the previous generation. The rest of the CPU cluster remains unchanged, meaning you still get three Cortex-X4 cores humming along at 3.3GHz and four efficient Cortex-A720 cores at 2.4GHz. Graphics duties are still handled by a familiar Immortalis-G925 MC12 GPU.

So, yeah, the Dimensity 9400 Plus is essentially an overclocked Dimensity 9400. Expect a modest bump in single-core benchmarks, but don’t hold your breath for earth-shattering performance gains across the board.

But here’s a potentially bigger deal, though: The new chip dramatically extends phone-to-phone Bluetooth range. It now supports Bluetooth connections over a whopping 10 kilometers — a huge leap from the 1.5-kilometer limit on the standard Dimensity 9400. That’s a massive upgrade. With brands like OPPO, vivo, and OnePlus already introducing some interesting long-range Bluetooth functions, it will be interesting to see how smartphone makers leverage this beefed-up capability.

On the AI front, MediaTek is sticking with its NPU 890 silicon but adding support for Speculative Decoding Plus. Think of it like super-fast predictive text. Normally, when an AI is writing something or responding to you, it figures out the next word, then the next, one by one. With Speculative Decoding Plus, it’s like the chip makes several guesses at the same time for what comes next. MediaTek claims this speeds up certain AI tasks, like chatbots or content generation on your device, by up to 20%.

Still talking AI, the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Plus is also optimized to run DeepSeek R1 Distill large language models — ranging from 1.5B to 8B parameters — directly on your phone. Interestingly, the Taiwanese manufacturer noted that the original 9400 should technically handle these models, too, just maybe not quite as efficiently as the Plus version.

Overall, the Dimensity 9400 Plus looks like a solid, if not groundbreaking, update aimed at keeping MediaTek competitive at the high end, particularly with its boosted AI smarts and connectivity features. It has already debuted on the OPPO Find X8s Plus and OPPO Find X8s. Expect the processor to power the vivo X200s as well — the unit is slated to launch later this month.
