China’s BYD is making serious waves in the Philippine automotive market.

The electric vehicle giant’s domestic arm has just announced a stunning sales performance for 2024, dominating the country’s nascent New Energy Vehicle market and hinting that Filipinos might finally be ready to embrace the electric future.

BYD Cars Philippines, in partnership with Ayala Group’s ACMobility, the official distributor of BYD passenger cars in the country, sold 4,780 passenger EVs in 2024, achieving a staggering 8,900% growth while also capturing a commanding 82% share of the NEV market. This includes a mix of popular models like the stylish Seal sedan, the compact Dolphin hatchback, and the family-friendly Atto 3 SUV.

The company even managed to secure a high spot in the overall passenger-vehicle market, surpassing established giants and other Chinese brands to claim the 11th position with a 1% market share. Not bad for a company that started the year with just two dealerships.

BYD isn’t just about flashy EVs. The Sealion 6 DM-i, a plug-in hybrid, also proved to be a massive hit with Filipino buyers, racking up 2,669 sales in 2024. This makes it clear that the company’s success isn’t just about riding the EV wave; it’s also about offering compelling vehicles with the right technology at the right price.

One key factor in its aggressive growth is its rapid expansion strategy. BYD closed out 2024 with 25 dealerships across the Philippines and plans to more than double that number in 2025.

BYD’s success in the Philippines mirrors its global dominance. It was recently reported that its total vehicle sales worldwide jumped more than 41% in 2024, year-on-year, to 4.27 million vehicles. BYD surpassed Honda (3.81 million sales), Nissan (3.35 million sales), and Suzuki (3.25 million sales) in global sales, proving that its blend of cutting-edge technology, affordable pricing, and aggressive expansion is a winning formula.
