The realme 14 Pro Series 5G is landing sometime next month, and get this: The back panel changes color.

Yeah, you read that right. We’re not talking subtle shade shifts; we’re talking a full-on transformation — at least, based on photos we’ve seen so far.

The lineup, available starting in January and comprised of the realme 14 Pro 5G and the beefier realme 14 Pro Plus 5G, is packing a temperature-sensitive rear cover. When things get chilly — think 16 degrees Celsius or below — the normally pearl-white back erupts in vibrant blue swirls, only to fade back to white as the phone warms back up.

The Pro Plus variant? It’s rocking an IP68 and IP69 rating, too, meaning it can take a dunk and a blast from a hot water jet. Meanwhile, the realme 14 Pro 5G gets an IP66 rating.

The realme 14 Pro Series 5G is said to feature the world’s first cold-sensitive color-changing design

Now, about that price tag. For context, last year’s online-only realme 13 Pro 5G launched in the Philippines at P24,999 (around $425 converted) for the sole 12GB/256GB configuration. The realme 13 Pro Plus 5G was a bit pricier, coming in at P28,999 ($493) for 256GB and P31,999 ($544) for 512GB. Will the realme 14 Pro Series 5G follow suit? The brand’s keeping mum for now.

The color-changing back panel is apparently the result of a collaboration with Nordic design studio Valeur Designers. realme‘s boasting about a special “fusion fiber” process with over 30 steps using bio-based materials to achieve the Pearl White look. But before you get too excited, this color-changing magic isn’t forever. The company admits the effect will degrade over time, with sunlight being the main culprit. Expect it to last about a year under normal use. So basically, it’s a cool party trick that’ll eventually fade, like your favorite T-shirt, if you wash it frequently.

As for the rear optics, both smartphones rock the now-familiar circular camera bump, but only the Pro Plus gets a periscope telephoto lens for those crisp portraits and zoomed-in shots.

Under the hood, the realme 14 Pro Plus 5G is sporting Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset. Built on TSMC’s 4nm process, which is a step up from Samsung’s 4nm node on the previous gen, this chip promises a hefty performance boost. According to the official numbers, expect a 40% faster GPU, 20% better CPU performance, and a 30% jump for AI tasks. Plus, it’s designed to be more efficient. Qualcomm’s claiming a 12% overall reduction in power consumption, with the new CPU cores a whopping 45% more efficient.

So, is the realme 14 Pro Series 5G worth your attention? The color-changing back is undeniably cool, albeit temporary. And the top-end Pro Plus’s specs look genuinely impressive. We’ll have to wait until we get our hands on any one of them to see if it lives up to the hype. But one thing’s for sure: realme isn’t afraid to shake things up.

Don’t forget: This one’s coming in January 2025!
