OPPO Find X8 review: Back for the crown

In Phones by Ramon LopezLeave a Comment

The OPPO Find X8 has officially arrived in the Philippines, and it’s not pulling any punches. This isn’t just another Android flagship; it’s a premium offering that’s clearly gunning for the iPhone’s crown.

While the design might whisper echoes of a certain fruit-themed tech giant, the Find X8 carves its own path with a unique blend of style, power, and hardware and software innovation. So, is this the OPPO smartphone that finally gives the Apple iPhone a run for its money? Or is it just another Android contender with big dreams and a familiar aesthetic?

We dive deep into the Find X8’s unique blend of style, power, and software to help you decide if this is the flagship you’ve been waiting for.

Say hello to the ‘O-Phone’

The OPPO Find X8 makes no bones about its premium ambitions. This phone screams high-end with a design language that, let’s be honest, takes more than a few cues from a certain Cupertino-based company.

Available in sleek matte silver and black, the Find X8 keeps fingerprints at bay while showcasing a distinctive circular camera island that proudly displays the Hasselblad branding. OPPO even throws in a color-matched silicone case in the box — clear for the silver, black for the, well, black. However, the clear case included with our silver review unit felt noticeably less premium than its black counterpart, lacking that satisfying sandstone-like texture. Still, the real treat here is the 80-watt SUPERVOOC charger nestled right in the box, to get the phone juiced up in a hurry.

Zooming into the circular camera island OPPO calls the Cosmos Ring

While the alert slider and that circular camera island OPPO calls the Cosmos Ring offer some differentiation, the Find X8’s DNA undeniably traces back to Apple’s design philosophy. From the flat display and chamfered edges to the smooth metal frame with those telltale antenna lines, it’s clear OPPO has the latest iPhones squarely in its sights.

But hey, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? And the OPPO Find X8 manages to carve out its own identity with a slender 7.85mm profile without the camera bump (which is also incredibly slim at a mere 3.01mm) and a featherlight 192g weight, making it significantly lighter than Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhone. It’s a handset that slips into your pocket with ease and feels fairly well-balanced, despite that slightly top-heavy camera module.

On the Find X8, the camera array sits within a symmetrical island that actually complements the smartphone’s aesthetic. The brand hasn’t sacrificed functionality for form either. That periscope-style telephoto lens is still there, discreetly tucked away within the refined camera housing.

Elsewhere, the flat aluminum frame means you can easily prop this device up on a flat surface without it doing a face plant. OPPO clearly sweats the small stuff, and it shows in the Find X8’s thoughtful design. Take the button placement, for instance: volume rocker above the power button — and not the other way around (you know who you are, Android OEMs!). And while other manufacturers are ditching the IR blaster, OPPO keeps this underrated feature alive. Lost the TV remote again? No problem, just whip out your Find X8 and channel your inner couch potato.

The iconic alert slider

Oh, and let’s not forget that iconic alert slider on the left side. Once you’ve experienced the satisfying click of switching between silent, vibrate, and ring modes, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. Rounding out the design are the usual suspects: USB-C port on the bottom, SIM card slot, and one half of the stereo setup. Speaking of the speakers, OPPO definitely didn’t phone it in (pun intended!) when it came to audio. The Find X8 pumps out sound that rivals some of the best flagship phones on the market. We’re talking impressive volume, crystal-clear clarity, plus a hint of bass that you won’t find in your average smartphone.

But where the OPPO Find X8 truly shines is in its surprising durability. The company went above and beyond with this one, exceeding the usual IP68 dust and water resistance with a full-on IP69 rating. That means this can handle high-pressure water jets up to 80°C. There’s more: The Find X8 also boasts an MGJB 150.18A MIL-STD rating for shock protection and Swiss SGS certification for drop resistance, as well as high-strength Corning Gorilla Glass 7i for the front panel. Yes, this thing is built to last. OPPO clearly wants you to hold onto your handset for the long haul, and with this level of ruggedness, you just might.

As far as the hardware is concerned, the OPPO Find X8 delivers a flagship experience that’s both familiar and undeniably stylish. Just maybe spring for a third-party case if you’re picking up the silver model.

Bezels be gone

The 6.59-inch LTPO OLED display of the OPPO Find X8 has very similar specifications to the Find X8 Pro that won’t be released in the Philippines. The main differences are that it’s a little smaller, and it’s completely flat, without the micro curves on the bezel. They effectively offer the same pixel density, too, and you get the same brightness output, which means the standard variant can peak at an eyeball-melting 4,500 nits for a portion of the screen.

We’re used to curved displays dominating the flagship phone scene, but the flat panel here is a refreshing change of pace, especially since the execution is top-notch. OPPO clearly put effort into making this one exceptional. The bezels surrounding the display are incredibly thin, measuring a mere 1.45mm. And they’re perfectly symmetrical for a balanced look. Even better, the glass sits flush with the frame, so you never feel that annoying edge when swiping from the side.

The BBK Electronics brand didn’t skimp on the screen specs either. The Find X8 boasts a pixel-dense 1.5K resolution that delivers crisp, detailed visuals. Gamers and video enthusiasts will likewise appreciate the smooth 120Hz refresh rate, which can adapt to your content for a more comfortable viewing experience.

OPPO even gives you granular control over the Find X8’s panel with the ability to manually set the refresh rate for individual apps. Want to prioritize buttery-smooth scrolling in your social media feeds while conserving battery life in less demanding apps? You got it. Though, it’s worth mentioning that the device still enforces app-specific refresh-rate limits. So, no forcing your favorite game to run at 120Hz if it’s not designed to do so.

The OPPO Find X8’s screen also gets a boost from the company’s own ProXDR tech, which basically means you get brighter highlights in HDR images. And with Dolby Vision and HDR10 Plus support on top of that, everything looks pretty darn vibrant. Plus, you can stream your favorite shows and movies in high-def on all the usual streaming services thanks to Google’s Widevine L1 certification.

The fastest flagship we’ve tested

While there has been a lot of media buzz surrounding the shiny new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite, OPPO went with an interesting choice, opting for the equally new and equally top-end MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset inside both the Find X8 as well as the Find X8 Pro. Don’t worry, though, this isn’t some second-rate silicon; the Dimensity 9400 is a top-tier processor that can go toe-to-toe with Qualcomm’s finest. Even better, you’re getting flagship-level performance regardless of whether you opt for the Find X8 or shell out extra cash for the Pro model, assuming it’s even available where you live.

Our review unit came with 12GB of physical RAM, which is plenty for even the most demanding multitaskers. Sadly, the storage is capped at 256GB in the Philippines, with no option to stretch it via a microSD card. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher, especially since those high-res videos and massive game files can eat up storage space quickly. Genshin Impact alone requires around 30GB of storage space, and you’ll probably need more for future content updates. After a month of using the Find X8 as our daily driver, that storage fills up fast. Between high-res photos and videos, plus all the games we installed to benchmark the Dimensity 9400, we’re already running low on space.

Benchmarks. The Find X8 delivered the highest benchmark scores we’ve seen on any smartphone across the board

As for the processor, MediaTek only offered the Dimensity 9400 to OEMs recently, making the OPPO Find X8 the first device in the Philippines to ship with the said flagship chip. And what a powerful one it is! The base model we’re testing delivered the highest benchmark scores we’ve seen on any smartphone across the board. Antutu, Geekbench, 3DMark — you name it, this device absolutely crushed it.

Benchmarks are one thing, but how does the Find X8 handle real-world use? In a word: flawlessly. This handset flies through everyday tasks with lightning-fast speed. Part of that buttery-smooth experience is thanks to ColorOS 15’s revamped animations, but the Dimensity 9400’s raw power is the real star of the show. Multitasking, video editing, streaming games and videos — it all happens effortlessly even on the base model we’re testing.

When it comes to games, the OPPO Find X8 can handle pretty much any Android game you throw at it, delivering high frame rates and max graphics settings. Sure, it can get a little warm during intense gaming sessions, but we never experienced any concerning heat levels or severe performance drops during our testing. The only problematic app we encountered was Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, which, for some reason, simply refused to boot on our review sample, despite numerous reinstalls. In the CPU Throttling Test app, our unit throttled to 77% of its max performance after a 15-minute run.

The OPPO Find X8 packs a 5,630mAh silicon-carbon battery into its relatively slim and lightweight chassis, and while that might not sound as massive as the Pro variant’s 5,910mAh power pack, it still puts most other flagship phones to shame. In our testing, we easily squeezed two full days of use out of a single charge with light to moderate usage. You’d have to be a serious power user to drain this thing in a single day.

Unless, of course, you’re like us and spend your days taking hundreds of images for a review. Even with a particularly battery-draining photowalk that ended with a video-editing session on CapCut, we still managed to squeeze out over four hours of screen-on time with 9% left in the tank. We also fired up GTA: San Andreas and cruised around Los Santos with the graphics cranked to the max. After 30 minutes of gameplay, the battery dipped by just 6%. That’s seriously impressive endurance, even for a phone with a large battery. Most days, we ended up with a comfortable 20% or more battery life remaining.

When it’s time to plug in, the Find X8’s included 80-watt SUPERVOOC charger delivers blazing-fast charging speeds. OPPO claims a full charge in just 48 minutes, and in our experience, that’s pretty much spot on. It supports 50-watt AIRVOOC wireless charging, too, which is pretty quick. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to pick up a proprietary OPPO charger to unlock incredible wireless-charging speeds.

ColorOS 15 is more than a fresh coat of paint

On the software front, the OPPO Find X8 boots Android 15-based ColorOS 15 out of the box. The software update policy OPPO has in store for the regular variant includes four OS releases and six years of security updates. The company claims this is its longest-ever security update commitment for a smartphone, which is a welcome change of pace in an industry that often leaves older devices vulnerable.

OPPO says it has been hard at work refining the user experience for this release, and the results are immediately apparent. This handset feels noticeably snappier than OPPO’s previous devices. Apps launch almost instantly, and navigating through the OS feels smooth and stutter-free. For better or worse, Apple’s influence is more noticeable than ever with this software update, and while it might divide opinions, we’re actually fans of the changes and novel features OPPO has introduced.

ColorOS 15 even includes support for the Grab app

One particularly handy addition is a Dynamic Island-esque bubble that pops up around the camera cutout, providing quick access to media controls, hotspot status, and other handy shortcuts. And here’s a fun little detail for our fellow Southeast Asians: ColorOS 15 even includes support for the Grab app. We found this especially useful, considering how often we rely on Grab for our daily commute and food deliveries. It’s a small touch, but it shows that OPPO is paying attention to the needs of its users in specific regions.

Of course, no modern smartphone OS is complete without a healthy dose of artificial intelligence, and ColorOS 15 is no exception. You’ll find all the usual AI-powered goodies here, including writing assistance, smart summaries, translation tools, and even AI-driven image-editing features like an eraser, clarity enhancer, and reflection removal.

Naturally, Circle to Search and Google Gemini are present as default features. There’s also a share-to-iOS function baked into ColorOS 15, though it requires a companion app on the receiving iPhone to be installed and relies on a Wi-Fi Direct connection. This user-friendly approach to iOS sharing is a welcome addition, and one we’d love to see replicated across the Android landscape. Here’s hoping other OEMs take note and follow suit.

OPPO’s fantastic AI Studio app deserves high praise as well. This isn’t your average photo editor; it’s a full-blown creative powerhouse that can transform your photos with the magic of generative AI. AI Studio lets you create stunning digital avatars from your own pictures, with a wide range of templates and styles to choose from. The results are seriously impressive, surpassing the quality of similar apps we’ve tried, including those with hefty subscription fees.

Now, about those credits. AI Studio uses a credit-based system, so it’s not completely unlimited. But don’t worry, you get a generous chunk of credits when you first sign up. Plus, you can earn more by using the app regularly. It’s a clever way to encourage creativity while still keeping things sustainable for OPPO.

AI Studio is just one example of how the brand is pushing the boundaries with its software. ColorOS 15 is more than just a fresh coat of paint. OPPO has successfully blended a familiar Android experience with some innovative touches, resulting in a software experience that’s both polished and practical.

Zooming to new heights

As you’d expect from a phone in the Find X range, the rear-facing camera system is the star of the show. OPPO went with a triple threat of 50-megapixel sensors, all neatly tucked away in that surprisingly slim camera housing. In practice, this means you get consistent image quality across the wide, ultrawide, and telephoto lenses. While there are still differences in focal length, the overall quality remains remarkably consistent. You won’t see jarring jumps in resolution or detail when switching between the three lenses.

The OPPO Find X8’s main camera boasts a 50-megapixel Sony LYT700 sensor with a 24mm-equivalent focal length. Even in less-than-ideal lighting conditions, like those cloudy Manila days, this camera captures stunningly detailed shots. It can handle up to 2x zoom on its own, but you’ll want to switch to the dedicated zoom lens for getting up close and personal.

Sample shots

Speaking of the telephoto, the Find X8 packs a 50-megapixel Sony LYT600 sensor paired with a periscope lens. This setup delivers a crisp 3x optical zoom, which can be further extended to 10x and beyond with the help of OPPO’s AI Telescope Zoom feature.

And here’s the thing: this AI-powered zoom isn’t just some software gimmick. We pushed it all the way to 30x — way beyond the optical zoom limit –and the results were astonishing. Normally, 30x digital zoom would leave you with a blurry, watercolor-esque mess. But on the Find X8, the images retained incredible detail and clarity. It’s almost like magic. OPPO’s AI is clearly working overtime here, and we’re loving it. This is how you do digital zoom right.

The ultrawide camera, backed by a 50-megapixel Samsung JN5 sensor, offers a slightly narrower 15mm focal length. This means you get less distortion at the edges, but it’s not as wide as some other ultrawide cameras on the market. We did notice some slight inconsistencies in brightness and white balance compared to the main camera, but that’s not uncommon with ultrawide shooters, even in this segment.

Final thoughts

The OPPO Find X8 is a flagship phone that confidently walks the line between familiar and innovative. While its design language might borrow a few pages from Apple’s playbook, OPPO has crafted a device that’s unmistakably its own — and it’s an excellent all-around package at that!

The powerful MediaTek Dimensity 9400 processor, coupled with OPPO’s refined ColorOS 15 software, delivers a premium experience that’s both smooth and feature-rich. The camera system is likewise impressive, capable of capturing exceptional images and remarkable zoom shots that redefine the boundaries of mobile photography. Sure, the limited storage option might be a drawback, especially given the model’s local price tag. But all things considered, the Find X8 is a compelling flagship that delivers a top-tier Android experience with a touch of Apple-inspired flair.

Should Apple be worried? It’s probably too early to sound the alarm, but the OPPO Find X8 is the kind of Android smartphone that could tempt even the most die-hard Apple fan.

In the Philippines, the OPPO Find X8 has a suggested retail price of P54,999 ($933) for the lone variant with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
