Huawei is about to make history with the Mate XT, the world’s first commercially available tri-fold foldable phone. And based on the initial preorder numbers, it’s expected to be a huge hit in its country of origin.

(Update, September 10: The Huawei Mate XT is now official!)

The Huawei Mate XT is set to launch on September 10 in China, just a day after Apple unveils the iPhone 16 series at its headquarters in California. The event will also mark the debut of the Luxeed R7, Huawei’s first SUV-coupe powered by the HarmonyOS Intelligent Driving platform.

Images and teaser videos for the trifold foldable have already been posted online by Huawei, and you can head to its Vmall online store now to preorder the Mate XT ahead of its launch. While the official price hasn’t been announced, it’s expected to be a premium offering given the device’s complexity and innovative features. Sales are scheduled to begin September 20.

Unsurprisingly, Huawei’s tri-fold foldable has generated significant buzz, with over 3 million preorders received at the time of this writing. However, rumors suggest that the device may be in limited supply. It will be available in red and black finishes with gold accents and offer storage options of 512GB or 1TB, paired with 16GB of physical RAM.

The technology giant hasn’t divulged anything else about the Huawei Mate XT, but with the event just a day away, expect to know all about the brand’s first tri-folding smartphone soon enough.

In related news, Apple has been displaced from the top five smartphone vendors in China for the first time, according to market-research firm Canalys. This marks a major victory for domestic Chinese brands, which now dominate the market.

Huawei, despite facing ongoing U.S. sanctions, secured the fourth position with 10.6 million smartphones shipped in the second quarter of 2024. This resurgence highlights its resilience and continued popularity among Chinese consumers. The upcoming launch of the Mate XT is expected to further solidify the company’s position and fuel its growth in its home market.
