Samsung‘s second Unpacked event of the year wasn’t just about wearables like the highly anticipated Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Watch Ultra. The South Korean tech giant also introduced its next generation of foldable flagships, with the global debut of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 and Samsung Z Fold6.

Both smartphones are now available for preorder in the Philippines, with wider availability kicking off July 31.

Pricing and availability

The Galaxy Z Flip6 starts at a competitive price point of P70,990 (around $1,218) for the 256GB version and goes up to P78,990 ($1,355) for the 512GB model. The Z Fold6 caters to the high-end market, with three storage options: 256GB for P105,990 ($1,818), 512GB for P113,990 ($1,955), and 1TB for P130,990 ($2,245). Both phones come in various color options, with exclusive colorways offered through Samsung’s official online store.

While the Z Flip6 focuses on refining the user experience with a more functional cover display and improved cameras, the Z Fold6 takes a bigger leap with a bold new design and a significantly brighter display. The choice between the two will depend on your needs and preferences. If you prioritize portability and a familiar clamshell form factor, the Flip is a compelling option. But if you need a powerful foldable phone for productivity and entertainment, the Fold might be worth the steeper price tag.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6: Refinement for clamshell-foldable fans

The new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is an evolution of the successful Z Flip formula. It retains the iconic clamshell design that made the series popular, offering a phone that unfolds into a spacious display for one-handed use.

Beside the more premium matte finish and color-matched camera rings, the upgrades here focus on internal hardware and enhancing the functionality of the cover display.

First look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6

Notably, the 3.4-inch Super AMOLED outer screen transforms from a notification center to a mini-productivity hub with new features like Suggested Replies for messages, access to Samsung Health updates, and music controls. The FlexCam mode, which lets you capture photos and videos using the folded phone, gets an AI-powered zoom boost to automatically adjust framing for on-the-go vloggers and content creators.

The camera system sees a significant leap forward with a new 50-megapixel main sensor, replacing the Galaxy Z Flip5’s 12-megapixel shooter. This promises sharper photos and better low-light performance, especially when combined with the improved Night mode with HDR for video.

Meanwhile, power users will appreciate the custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset coupled with a vapor chamber — a first for the Galaxy Z Flip series — as well as the bump in battery capacity to 4,400mAh. However, wired charging remains capped at 25 watts, which might feel like a missed opportunity for some, especially considering competitors are pushing much faster charging speeds.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: New look, more power

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 adopts a bolder design compared to its predecessor, taking design cues from the Galaxy S24 Ultra announced earlier this year. This shift in aesthetics brings a more modern look with sharper edges, but it might not resonate with everyone who loved the softer curves of the earlier Fold models.

First look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6

Both Z phones benefit from Samsung’s most durable build yet, featuring Armor Aluminum frames and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for increased protection against everyday wear and tear. While there’s still no integrated S Pen slot, the new S Pen offers improved functionality like Sketch to Image, allowing users to generate image variations from their drawings in the Gallery or Notes app.

Another (literal) bright spot is the significantly brighter 7.6-inch foldable display, reaching a peak brightness of 2,600 nits. It makes this foldable ideal for content consumption and creative tasks even in bright outdoor conditions. Like the Z Flip6, the Z Fold6 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, optimized for AI processing and graphics. Samsung touts improved sustained performance thanks to a larger vapor chamber cooling system, allowing users to push this Fold harder for longer without overheating concerns.
