Dominating the virtual hardwood for years, NBA 2K returns with its next iteration, NBA 2K25.
(Update, October 9: Check out our in-depth review of NBA 2K25!)
(Update, September 10: The NBA 2K25 Arcade Edition has a launch date!)
The news comes as no surprise, considering the franchise’s annual release schedule and lack of serious competition (RIP, NBA Live).
With the NBA season having recently ended with the Boston Celtics crowned as NBA champions for the 2023-2024 season, support for last year’s NBA 2K24 is coming to a close. All eyes are on its successor, with 2K sharing the first details on NBA 2K25, including its release date, various editions for purchase, and the cover athletes tied to each version of the game.
Here’s the lowdown on what you need to know about NBA 2K25 based on what has been shared so far:
- Release date and platforms. September 6, 2024. Marking a win for PC fans, the current-gen version will finally be available alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. NBA 2K25 will also be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. However, considering rampant cheating issues on PC’s NBA 2K24 that exist to this day — a year after the game’s release — we wouldn’t hold our breath for the upgraded PC version.
- Apple Arcade Edition. Unconfirmed, but if it follows last year’s trend, expect a pay-to-play edition arriving a month after the main launch on Apple Arcade.
- Cover athletes and editions. Fresh off his championship win, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum graces the standard edition, priced at $69.99 ($59.99 for Switch). The GameStop exclusive WNBA Edition (also $69.99) features Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson. Ballers looking for extra content can snag the All-Star Edition featuring both Tatum and Wilson for $99.99. Finally, the Hall of Fame Edition honors the legendary Vince Carter, coinciding with his induction this year, and includes everything from the All-Star Edition plus an NBA League Pass subscription, Season 1 Pro Pass, and a MyCareer Vince Carter jersey. All this at a premium of $149.99.
While gameplay details remain under wraps, 2K promises the return of fan-favorite modes like MyCareer, MyTeam, MyNBA, and the City, all aiming for the “most true-to-life basketball experience yet.” Expect more info and gameplay footage to drop as we approach September.
